Chapter 8: Listen to Your Inner Voice
“You will progress faster, and will be in closer touch with God, as you learn to listen to your inner voice.”
“Do you mean my conscience?”
“Not exactly. Not if you mean your internal sense of right and wrong. Your conscience is definitely important, but that’s not what I mean when I talk about your inner voice.”
“What is it then?”
“Everyone hears it in their own way, and not always the same way every time. For some people, it can seem like an actual voice.”
I suddenly remembered the young medic hearing a voice say, “This man is not dead.”
“Other times,” Drake continued, “it can seem like a thought or impression. Your inner voice can seem like it’s coming from you, at least until you learn to distinguish the difference between the thoughts you create and those that come to you from elsewhere.”
“Where do they come from if not from me?”
“You have probably heard it described as God’s Spirit talking to you. That’s a close enough explanation.”
“But not exactly?”
“No, not exactly. It can also come from those helpers I mentioned earlier, who assist and act on behalf of God.” Drake paused for a moment, as if weighing whether I was ready for more. “It’s really a little more complex. You see, all truth exists everywhere in the universe. When you tune your mind, your body, and your spirit to the right frequencies, you can tap into divine truths by connecting with your higher self—that part of you that is still directly connected with God. When your whole being is attuned to the right frequency, you can simply ask God and then instantly know the answer.”
“I can get the answer to any question?”
Drake smiled. “I know what you’re thinking. Again, it’s not as simple as it might sound. If you want the answer to something selfish, and ask with selfish intent, then you are already out of alignment. Remember, it all has to do with being in tune with the right frequency. And you also have to remember your reason for being on Earth to begin with.”
“To learn?”
“Yes. To learn, to grow, and to exercise that divine ability to choose. It’s just as a parent lets a child explore on their own, so they can learn to make their own decisions, but the parent is close by to help if the child gets stuck. Sometimes, it’s other family members, or close friends, or mentors who help. They can all contribute to our growth.”
I sensed that there was more behind what he was saying. As soon as I had the thought, Drake smiled.
“Yes. There are others who help us and spiritually guide us while on Earth. But there are others who have a calling to be a mentor.”
“Like you?”
“My calling is actually a bit different. I’m more of a guide. But yes, there are those who can help provide answers and promptings. You could call them angels. It’s an accurate enough name. So, learn to listen to that inner voice.”
“How can I get better at that?”
“It takes practice. As you intentionally pay attention to that voice, you can get better at recognizing it and listening to what it tells you. There are other things you can do, too, that will help make you more receptive. Things that will make you a better antenna if you will.”
“What are those things?”
“The most basic is to take care of your body. If you don’t get enough sleep, you will be less receptive to promptings. It’s the same if you get too much sleep. Either way, your body, and your mind, will be sluggish. The things you take into your body make a difference, too.”
My thoughts turned to the supplement I had taken. I wondered what had been wrong with it. Drake gave me a knowing look, and I put the thought from my mind, focusing again on the lesson.
“There are so many chemicals in the food you eat these days. Preservatives, artificial colors, artificial flavors. They build up in your system and degrade your spiritual antenna. You can still receive impressions with a damaged antenna, but you’re not as receptive as you could be. The closer to the earth your food is, the better it is for your spirit as well as your body.”
That made sense to me. “You said that taking care of my body is the most basic way. Are there other ways to improve my… reception?”
“That’s our next principle, Vinney.”

“Where do they come from if not from me?”

“You have probably heard it described as God’s Spirit talking to you. That’s a close enough explanation.”
“But not exactly?”

“I can get the answer to any question?”
Drake smiled. “I know what you’re thinking. Again, it’s not as simple as it might sound.
