Having escaped the ‘inside’ and returned to the ’frontal side’ of reality, the diva and the priestess confirmed with relief that everything was as it should be. With no other option, they set off back towards the square.
2/86
“This is sheer mockery!” shouted Matilda. “We’re on a complete hiding to nowhere.”
3/86
“Hiding what?” asked Itfut. “I don’t always understand your expressions.” “I said that things don’t look good for us.”
4/86
“Either the Gods are angry about something, or we are being sent a test or initiation of some kind.”
5/86
“You’ll be telling me next that we’ve got to placate these Gods of yours and make them a sacrifice!”
6/86
“No, that’s what primitive peoples do. We’re more inclined to strive towards the perfection of the Gods, to reach their level, so that we can command the laws of reality as they do.”
7/86
「Futi,
“Futi, then command this reality to take us home!”
8/86
“I don’t know how to yet. There’s something wrong with my memory. The past is all a blur.”
9/86
“Well, my reality is currently one continual nightmare.”
10/86
Exhausted, they finally returned to the spot where they first met beside the megalith in the square.
11/86
“So, what do you think? Shall we go and test our fate on the other side, where everything is wavering?” Itfut suggested.
12/86
“No. I’ve had enough. We need to rest and at least have something to eat,” said Matilda.
13/86
“Is there anywhere here that we can get something to eat?”
14/86
“Are you hungry, Futi? I don’t know how, but the glamrocks said that hlevjun gives them food.”
15/86
「什麼是hlevjun?」
“What hlevjun?”
16/86
“Um, the megalith, at least that’s what they called it. Come on, let’s go take a look.”
17/86
They went inside and looked around.
18/86
“Oh! The head’s disappeared!” Matilda exclaimed in surprise. “Head? What head?”
19/86
“There was a head here on that plinth, the glamorc, their kind of God, but now it’s gone!”
20/86
The altar had in fact disappeared and, in its place, stood a cylinder about three meters high and one-and-a-half meters in diameter made from a tinted glass-like material. The diva and the priestess wandered round the cylinder touching its smooth surface which was devoid of the slightest detail or embellishment.
21/86
“Look, it does not reflect anything,” said Itfut.
22/86
“And you can’t see through the sides either,” said Matilda. “Interesting, what is it and what’s it for?”
23/86
“Let’s take a look around and explore.”
24/86
They walked around the megalith’s entire interior space but did not find anything exceptionally unusual. Along the walls there were half-protruding columns, which, curving upwards, turned into a high-reaching arch. From somewhere below, a green light was streaming out of an enclave. There was not a single detail that could have suggested the presence of a device or control panel.
25/86
“You said there might be food here?” said Itfut. “Well, that’s what they said.”
26/86
They approached the cylinder again.
27/86
“I think this thing has some kind of function,” said Matilda. “We just need to understand how it works. There must be a button or something somewhere.”
28/86
“What is a button?” asked Itfut.
29/86
“It’s a thing you press and then something happens, like food appears.” “Does that kind of thing really happen?”
30/86
“Yes, in my world there are machines like this, only you have to put money in first, then you press the button and it gives you food or water.”
31/86
「Tili,
“Tili, I don’t really get what you’re talking about, anyway, there isn’t any button here.”
32/86
“There must be. Then what are we going to do?”
33/86
“As far as I know, you don’t always have to do something in order to receive.” “What do you mean?”
34/86
“Well, there is nothing you can do to make it rain for example or make the sun come out. And you can’t force it to rain or the sun to shine. But if you want something very badly, they can want the same thing with you.”
35/86
“Wow! Matilda stared at the priestess in complete amazement. “I have never heard anyone talk like that! But there is something in what you say... Wait! I have had success with something here already!”
36/86
The diva straightened her bow and started whispering something while pacing back and forth.
37/86
“What are you doing?” asked Itfut. “It’s not working. Damn!”
38/86
At that moment, something started buzzing inside the cylinder and a segment emerged, on top of which lay a small box.
39/86
“I don’t believe it!” Matilda exclaimed.
40/86
She opened the box to find it contained sweets. Matilda took one to try. And instantly started jumping about and squealing.
41/86
“Tili, you’re mad!” said Itfut, scared for her friend.
42/86
But Matilda continued to jump and squeal. Then she grabbed the box and presented it to the priestess.
43/86
「Futi!」
“Futi!” she said with a shout. “It’s chocolate-coated cherries! Try one!”
44/86
“What, what?” The priestess took a sweet, chewed and melted into a smile. “How did you manage that? What did you do?”
45/86
“I did not do anything, just like you said! I wanted it, that’s all. It’s my bow! It’s my bow!”
46/86
“Wait, wait wait. What’s any of this got to do with your bow? Would you calm down!”
47/86
“Sometimes I get a strange feeling in my back.” Matilda explained, gesticulating enthusiastically. It’s happened here a couple of times before. I remember about my bow, then I want something really badly, and then I get this strange sensation and then whatever I wanted actually materializes!”
48/86
“What did you feel exactly?”
49/86
“A kind of heavy feeling, as if there were something between my shoulders, something...”
50/86
“Hey! I know what that is!” Now it was Itfut’s turn to get excited only she instantly began to doubt herself. “Or maybe not... I definitely know what I know! But it’s a bit of a blur. I can’t quite recall exactly...”
51/86
“So, tell me what you know about it!” said Matilda impatiently.
52/86
Reality is controlled by random thoughts that originate somewhere at the back of the mind. If you want something with a burning, unstoppable desire, then you have to make your desire one of those random thoughts. Something like that.”
53/86
“I don’t quite catch your meaning,” said Matilda. “What is it, that thing behind?”
54/86
“I only vaguely recollect,” said Itfut. “As I say, I’ve lost my memory. My entire past is like a dream. Just glimpses.”
55/86
“Futichka, you have to remember! Our lives may depend on it, do you understand?”
56/86
“I’ll try. Tell me what you did. Whatever you did, it worked!”
57/86
“I focused on my bow, waited until I could sense that feeling behind me and imagined a box of chocolates.”
58/86
“And that’s it?”
59/86
“That’s it. Do you get the feeling of something behind you, on your back?” Itfut raised her head thinking of something and said,
60/86
“No, but I have the feeling that I used to know what it was and how to use it. I can’t make it work anymore though for some reason.”
61/86
“I am sure you will remember, and when you do, it’ll work for you too. The most important thing to know is that whatever it is, this thing works. I’m going to give it another go. What do you want?”
62/86
“Something to drink.”
63/86
Matilda touched her bow again, worked some kind of magic, and the miracle repeated itself. The cylinder made the same buzzing sound and the flat segment extended outwards delivering two cups of water.
64/86
“You’re practically a priestess yourself!” said Itfut.
65/86
They took the glasses and drank the water looking at each other, their eyes shining with delight.
66/86
“Cool! What delicious water!” said Matilda. They put the glasses down.
67/86
“Interesting. I wonder how these little tables go back in.” Matilda touched the edge of the segment and it slid back in together with the glasses, which passed through the cylinder wall as if it did not exist. Then she closed the other segment.
68/86
“Nothing can surprise me now,” said Itfut. “There is some kind of other- planetary technology at work here. Unbelievable!”
69/86
「Tili,
“Tili, you’re using incomprehensible words again.”
70/86
“La-la-la! It doesn’t matter! Right now, we need to eat. What’s your favorite dish?”
71/86
「Flamidi。」
“Flamidi.”
72/86
“Now that’s a word I don’t know. What is it?” “It’s a kind of baked fish.”
73/86
“I love fish, too. I can’t guarantee it’ll be the exact same dish, but we’ll conjure something up for sure.”
74/86
Matilda did her magic for a moment and then, one segment after another started emerging from the cylinder carrying all kinds of dishes.
75/86
“It’s nothing short of a miracle! And you imagined all this?” asked Itfut surprised although she had sworn, she would not be any more.
76/86
“It’s a buffet!” “A what, what?”
77/86
“Never mind. Ah, I forgot something.”
78/86
As soon as she had finished speaking another segment emerged delivering cutlery. Then, a table and two chairs rose up unexpectedly right out of the ground almost knocking the diva and the priestess over.
79/86
“Ooh! Now that wasn’t me!” Matilda exclaimed.
80/86
“I think this time it was me,” said Itfut. “It just occurred to me that all we need now is a table and chairs.”
81/86
“Wow! A random thought? You see, you can do it!” “Accidentally.”
82/86
“It looks like it is not just the column that works but the floor too.” “We probably ought to be careful of our thoughts.”
83/86
“You’ve got to remember what it is we have behind us, and how to work with it.”
84/86
“Okay, okay. I get the impression that everything is working so easily here because we are in this temple. Nothing is that easy in reality.”
85/86
“So get on with remembering, Futichka. Now, let’s eat!”
86/86
They dug into the food and began sharing stories of their adventures. When the diva told the priestess of how she had managed to tame the glamrocks, Ifut jumped up and began to spin about laughing uncontrollably, and then Matilda joined her. The new-found friends were chatting away without a care in the world enjoying their happiest moment since their arrival in this strange, frightening world. At least for now, things were not turning out too badly. Most importantly, they were no longer alone. They had each other. What they would experience next only the world around them knew.

“What, what?” The priestess took a sweet, chewed and melted into a smile. “How did you manage that? What did you do?”
45/86
(bow)」
71/86
“Flamidi.”
“Flamidi.”
