Nested Realities
1/66
Caramilla sat with her elbows on the table and her chin resting in her hands for another minute or two after the friends had finished their story contemplating all she had heard.
2/66
“It all sounds just as far-fetched and it does sound realistic, my dears,” Caramilla responded finally. “Only I don’t advise you to tell anyone else what you have just told me. No-one else would believe you.”
3/66
“We would not expect anyone to, gracious Caramilla,” said Eejit. “Why do you believe us, though, and why do you think our story sounds in some ways realistic?”
4/66
“Something that seems totally inconceivable in one reality is sometimes distinctly possible in another.”
5/66
“What do you mean? In another reality?” asked fastidious Submarine. “Yes, in a dream for example.”
6/66
“In a dream, yes, but a dream is not real!”
7/66
“Are you certain that the reality in which you find yourselves now is actually real?”
8/66
“Of course! Take this table... it’s solid and we are all alive and well. We can touch each other.”
9/66
“Everything looks and feels like it’s physically real in a dream, too, as if you can reach out and touch it all. So how can you tell the difference between what is actual, physical reality and what only appears to be a physical reality?”
10/66
“It’s obvious!” said Submarine. “We live our lives in physical reality, whereas a dream is something we only see when we are asleep!”
11/66
“By the same token, you can fall asleep in a dream and you can wake up inside a dream,” Caramilla replied. “In that case, the first dream would be the real dream, whereas the second would be a nested dream, not a real one, right?”
12/66
“Um, I don’t know...”
13/66
“Well, I’m not at all sure that this reality is genuinely physical reality,” said Puscilla. “The people here are more like dolls. Of catty-course, with the exception of yourself, Caramilla. I have even met characters from my own books here. Surpurrprising, but a fact nonetheless!”
14/66
“We have to assume that if the present reality can be paused like a film strip then it can hardly be considered physical reality,” remarked Brunhilda.
15/66
“I have no idea which reality I would call physical reality,” said Caramilla. “Oh, interesting. What do you mean by that Caramilla?” asked Submarine.
16/66
“I suppose I don’t know what physical reality is really like. I have no way of knowing. Do you know?”
17/66
“Caramilla, all your questions have us completely stumped!” said Cow. “They scare me,” added Submarine.
18/66
“When a person falls asleep, they shift into a different reality. When they wake up, they return to this reality. But how did they enter this reality originally?
19/66
When they were born, presumably, but where did they come from to get here? Probably from the same reality a person goes to when they die. Then where, in turn, did they come from before appearing in that reality? And then you have to ask yourself, which one of all those realities is the ultimate reality? The reality of dreaming or waking reality? The other world or the world beyond the other world? And you could go on like that forever.”
20/66
After these words everyone was quiet busy processing their own thoughts.
21/66
“It seems clear that all realities have to be considered genuine.” Eejit was first to speak. “Otherwise, they are all just an appearance of reality. It all depends how you look at it.”
22/66
“And you could also look at it as if there weren’t lots of different realities, just one consisting of separate layers, like an onion. And as we fall asleep and wake up again, as we are born and as we die, we pass through the layers like a series of nested dreams,” said Caramilla.
23/66
“So, what might be the original source of all those nested realities, and where are they?” asked Beast. “I can remember several of my own incarnations, but I have never noticed how the process actually happens.”
24/66
“Metoo,” said Puscilla. “My metamorphoses are like a shift from dreaming to waking life and back again. It’s a kind of weird moganimation.”
25/66
“It’s the same with me,” said Cow, “spontaneous transformation.” “Me too!” said Submarine.
26/66
“The original source of all realities lies in the hands of the Creator,” said Caramilla. “Just as all the secrets of reality lie in his hands. Reality is the strangest of jokes. We are all so used to looking at what’s happening on her stage that few ever think to look in the wings.”
27/66
“The most important thing for us is to work out which reality we are in now: our own or some other, foreign reality,” said Eejit.
28/66
“Although the lid appeared when we were still in our own reality,” noted Cow.
29/66
“Maybe the lid penetrated into our reality from inside this reality,” Beast suggested.
30/66
“And there’s one more enquiring question that’s important to us,” added Submarine. “How do we get home?”
31/66
“Caramilla, have you ever seen the mirror-like object we told you about?” asked Eejit. “What do you know about it?”
32/66
“Yes, I’ve seen it,” Caramilla replied. “It appears to be some kind of boundary between two worlds or two aspects of reality. But I don’t know any more than that. Science is incapable of providing an explanation for the phenomenon either.”
33/66
“Not that your science would know!” Puscilla exclaimed. “It’s a complete pussfranity!”
34/66
“What Puscilla is trying to say is that it’s an absolute profanity,” Cow explained. “Yes. Precisely. It’s total mogsense!”
35/66
“And what direction is the object from here?” asked Submarine. “We seem to have forgotten how we got here or where we came from, but we might remember if we can get back to the object.”
36/66
“To the south. This street will take you southwards if you turn left as you leave the villa,” Caramilla replied.
37/66
“But before we do anything, we have to deal with the lid,” the queen stated. “Caramilla, is it really true that no-one here is worried that there’s a lid across the sky? I mean, it’s a catastrophe!”
38/66
“Everyone has accepted the lid, like they’ve accepted the state of the ecology and they don’t want to change anything,” Caramilla replied. “Planes have stopped flying but everyone stubbornly pretends that the lid is nothing to be worried about and everything is just as it should be.”
39/66
“So, there’s an airport here and you can fly to other destinations?” “There used to be but not anymore. Everyone travels by train now.” “Do your pseudo-scientists really not understand what they’ve done?”
40/66
“At the moment they’re working on producing scientific proof that the lid is totally harmless, quite beneficial and even essential.”
41/66
“So, is there nothing that can be done?” asked Brunhilda.
42/66
“I do have an idea,” said Caramilla. “I could send you to the Academy as representatives of the supervisory board. You would inform them that you are closing the lid project and demand that they stop sending radiation into the atmosphere.”
43/66
“But Caramilla,” said Eejit in surprise, “we all look so eccentric, no-one would believe we bore any relation to an officialdom.”
44/66
“Oh, I’ll cook you up the kind of document that no official would dare disobey. Please, follow me, come on my dears, follow me!”
45/66
Caramilla led the guests into her office, where their gaze was met by a strange apparatus representing an intricate interweaving of pipes and crude metal constructions in combination with sophisticated electronics. Caramilla turned on the machine. It made a humming noise and its light bulbs began to blink.
46/66
“This is my baking machine. It’s my very own invention!” she said. “It will concoct any document or certificate you like. Our system’s bureaucracy is as vast as our society’s sleep is deep, so this machine makes life much easier.”
47/66
“Wow!” said Eejit just as amazed as his friends.
48/66
Caramilla pushed various buttons and pulled a number of levers until an inscription lit up on the screen that read “supervisory board”. The machine puffed, made internal creaking sounds and after a short period of productivity issued a ready-made document. The sheet of paper marked with a letterhead and bearing an official stamp read in the following manner:
49/66
“This certificate genuinely certifies that the bearers of said certificate are members of the Supreme Supervisory Board and are vested with the relevant powers authorizing them to empower other relevant officials, as well as to deprive them of said powers.”
50/66
“Dear Caramilla,” asked Eejit, “if I might clarify, what specific powers does this document gives us, and what kind of official can it be presented to?”
51/66
“It’s right there: ‘relevant powers in relation to relevant officials’,” said Caramilla.
52/66
“And that should be enough?”
53/66
“More than enough. The most important thing is that the document is written in a style concordant with official understanding.”
54/66
“And what if they ignore the document? What then?” asked the queen.
55/66
Caramilla thought for a moment.
56/66
“Do you think you could stop the movie like before?” “Abso-catty-lutely!” replied Puscilla.
57/66
“Then listen up. The electric telegraph has a self-destruct mechanism. On the right of the control panel, you will see a red lever beneath the glass bearing the inscription ‘PES’. When you stop reality, smash the glass and turn the lever all the way. That will initiate the self-destruct program and the entire scientific gizmo will go up in flames.”
58/66
“Caramilla, what is ‘PES’?” asked Eejit.
59/66
“It’s an abbreviation for ‘end of the experiment of science’.” “So why does is start with a ‘P’?”
60/66
“They say ‘pend’ instead of ‘end’ to make it sound more scientific.”
61/66
“Pussy-pend, my tail!” exclaimed Puscilla. “We’ll give them a complete apo- catty-lypse!”
62/66
“Just be careful,” said Caramilla. “If you have to draw on the last resort, do it because when the movie starts playing again, they’ll sound the alarm and launch a raid to find you.”
63/66
“Don’t you worry, Caramilla,” said the queen. “We’ll get it right. Thank you for everything.”
64/66
“Thank you, my dears! All hope lies with you now!” Then Caramilla gave them directions to the Academy and accompanied them to the porch.
65/66
“When it is over, we’ll come back and tell you all about it,” Submarine assured her.
66/66
“I’ll be waiting for you, my dears!”

3/66

“Of course! Take this table... it’s solid and we are all alive and well. We can touch each other.”

18/66

“Not that your science would know!” Puscilla exclaimed. “It’s a complete pussfranity!”

55/66
Caramilla
59/66
「這是‘科學實驗之結束’(end of the experiment of science) 的縮寫。」
