Mannequin Catwalk

商場裡死一般的寂靜。圓形畫廊沉浸在半黑暗中，只有玻璃櫥窗裡靜止的假人被微弱地照亮。其中一個假人動了動，展示著一件帶有鑽石領和帽子的深色晚禮服。它轉頭朝向它的鄰居說話，儘管那無表情的白色塑料臉一點變化也沒有。

The mall was filled with deadly silence. The circular gallery was immersed in semi-darkness and only the motionless mannequins in glass showcases were lit, albeit very faintly. One of the mannequins stirred, the one displaying a dark evening dress with a diamond-studded collar and hat. It turned its head toward its neighbor and spoke, although the expressionless, white, plastic face made no change at all.

「瑪蒂爾達！你把我們帶到哪裡了？」

“Matilda! Where have you brought us?”

第二個穿著連身衣，背後綁著不協調蝴蝶結的假人開始移動手腳，轉向第一個假人，用同樣面具般的表情回應。

The second mannequin dressed in a jump suit with an incongruous bow tied to the back, started moving its hands and feet, and turning around to face the first mannequin, responded with the same mask-like expression.

「福蒂！我弄錯了一點。我試著讓我們回到自己的假人裡，但結果變成這樣。」

“Futi! I got it slightly wrong. I tried to get us back into our own mannequins, but we ended up like this.”

「我們是誰？我們在哪裡？」

“Who are we? Where are we?”

「我們真的是假人，看起來我們在一家服裝店裡。」

“We’re literally mannequins and it looks like we’re in a clothing store.”

兩個假人從基座上走下來，在衣架和掛桿間徘徊。這是一個奇怪的景象，如果不是完全令人不安——兩個假人移動和說話，但它們的塑料臉完全沒有動靜。

Both mannequins stepped down from the plinth and wandered up and down the racks and rails. It was a strange sight, if not downright disturbing — two mannequins moving and talking, their plastic, faces remaining completely motionless.

「哇，好漂亮的東西。得試試這些！」瑪蒂爾達尖叫著，翻找著掛在掛桿上的衣服。

“Wow, nice things. Gotta try these on!” squealed Matilda rummaging through the suits hanging from the rails.

“Tili! You’ve picked a fine time!” said Itfut dampening Matilda’s enthusiasm. “We need to transform back into our normal appearance and our own clothes.”

“Well, I think I look normal. Normal enough for all the shoppers to look up at me enviously when they walk by.”

Matilda continued looking through the suits and dresses without a care in the world and then Itfut started doing the same as if Matilda’s mood was catching.

“They might envy you, but they admire me!” Itfut said while straightening her snazzy hat. “See? How do I look?”

“Why are you dressed better than me?” Matilda suddenly answered aggressively. “I hate you!”

「原來是這樣嗎？！」女祭司推了她的朋友一把。瑪蒂爾達踉蹌了一下，跌倒時撞倒了一個衣架。歌后站起來，撕扯著女祭司的衣服。女祭司開始反擊她的對手，情緒絲毫不比她低。

“So that’s how it is, is it?!” The priestess gave her friend a shove. Matilda stumbled and knocked over a rack as she fell. The diva picked herself back up and lashed out at the priestess tearing at her dress. The priestess began mauling back at her rival, no less wound up than she was.

「你剛碰了我的蝴蝶結，你這個賤人！」瑪蒂爾達失去理智地喊道。

“You just touched my bow, you slut!” Matilda yelled having lost all sense of self-control.

“My diamond collar is simply stunning!” Itfut shouted even louder. “You’ll never look anything like as good as me, you ugly cow!”

“I’ll break your hand off!”

“Oh yeah? And I’ll twist your head off!”

說著，女祭司扭下了歌后的頭，頭掉到地上，滾過地板。歌后用力扯下女祭司的手臂，扔到一邊。她們不顧損失，繼續瘋狂地折磨對方。突然，她們的怒火像出現時一樣迅速消退。

With that, the priestess twisted the diva’s head off, which fell to the ground and rolled across the floor. With some force, the diva pulled off the priestess’s arm and lobbed it to one side. Paying no attention to their losses, they continued to torment each other with unfailing frenzy. Suddenly their fury subsided just as swiftly as it had appeared.

「好吧，好吧，我不需要贏，」伊特福特說，她的聲音出奇地平靜。

“Okay, okay, I don’t need to win,” said Itfut her voice unexpectedly calm.

They straightened each other’s clothes with a conciliatory, albeit useless gesture, since all their clothing was torn to shreds.

“Hatred is a good feeling. Indifference and apathy are the really negative emotions,” Itfut continued.

“What?!” said Itfut beginning to get worked up again. “So, you hate me, do you?!”

“No, of course I don’t hate you.” Matilda replied raising her voice. “I’ll just kill you, the next time I see you!”

“Well, consider that this time! Do you want me to rip your head off again, stuffed bird?”

「你沒機會。我會打掉你的腦袋，賤人！」 「哦，你這個動物！」

“You don’t stand a chance. I’ll knock your block off, bitch!” “Oh, you animal!”

她們再次抓住對方，翻倒在地，尖叫著在地上滾來滾去，然後突然停下來，就像她們開始時一樣。

They grabbed hold of each other again, toppled over, shrieking and rolling around on the floor and then stopped just as suddenly as they had started.

“Futi, what are we doing?” Matilda was coming to her senses. “It’s a thin line between love and hate, Tili,” said Itfut.

They both stood up, disheveled and confused as if shaking off the grip of delusion.

“Let’s say that you will be yourself and I will be myself,” said Itfut. “We’ll just stop getting at each other,” said Matilda.

“More specifically, we’ll stop making demands of each other all the time.” “And having expectations of each other.”

伊特福特接著沉默了。

Itfut went quiet after that.

「或者你不需要？」瑪蒂爾達不確定地問。

“Or maybe you don’t?” asked Matilda with uncertainty.

「為什麼你不能就像我希望的那樣？」伊特福特突然開始抱怨。

“Why can’t you just be how I want you to be?!” Itfut started complaining suddenly.

「那為什麼你不能照我說的去做？！」 「我受不了你這樣！」 「滾開！我再也不想見到你！」

“And why can’t you just do what I tell you to do?!” “I can’t bear you when you’re being like this!” “Piss off! I don’t want to see you ever again!”

她們又要開始打架，但伊特福特突然停下來，搖了搖頭。

Once again, they were about to start fighting but Itfut stopped suddenly and shook her head.

「伊莉特！醒醒！」

“Ilit! Wake up!”

「你叫我什麼？」 「記得你的第二個名字！」

“What did you call me?” “Remember your second name!”

「我是伊莉特，你是圖芙蒂。你是圖芙蒂，我是伊莉特！我們怎麼了？」

“I’m Ilit and you are Tufti. You’re Tufti and I am Ilit! What is wrong with us?”

“We keep falling asleep. We’re drifting into the mannequins’ dream and forgetting who we really are. Say to yourself: I am me!”

“I am me!” Matilda gave a start and then woke up too. “Futi! What a thick, boggy dream that was!”

“Yes, it really sucks you in,” said Itfut. “And your conscious awareness gets clouded and lost. We must stay aware!”

“I can’t believe that just happened to us! We behaved liked monsters! What crap!”

“Oh yes!” Matilda said remembering suddenly. “When I was a cookie and you were halva, we were so empty and stupid but that was nothing compared to the mannequins. They’re completely braindead and nasty, too!”

“It’s more like they’re soulless.”

“But why are they so nasty? I never imagined they could be like that. And we behaved just like them!”

“It turns out the mannequins really are dumb. It’s such a good thing we managed to get away from them.”

“We aren’t in the clear yet, Tili. We managed to escape their movie and their roles, but we still haven’t reentered our own bodies.”

“Oh yes!” said Matilda as the truth dawned on her again. “We need to get back into our own bodies, our own mannequins as quickly as possible! I can feel my awareness drifting back into sleep again!”

“Don’t drop off! Remember! What does it mean to have self-control?” “To have self-control means to control where your attention goes.” “And what else?”

“And whenever you do anything, ask yourself, ‘is it really you deciding to do this or is someone else in control of you?”

In that moment, both mannequins transformed fluidly into two eccentric-looking individuals. One was dressed in an ankle-length dress of dark-blue velvet and was wearing a neck collar studded with diamonds. Her face was covered in crimson war paint and the cheekbones beneath her green eyes were decorated with a row of white spots. Her black hair was cut into a bob. She was a priestess, scary and yet beautiful and graceful at the same time. The other figure was dressed in a dark-green jumpsuit and was wearing pink platforms. Her face was covered in blue face make-up and there was a huge pink bow attached to her lower back. Her hair was wild-looking and dyed light blue. She was a quintessential diva, or you could say, a larger than life doll but rather than having the normal, cute, doll-like prettiness, there was something extraordinary about her beauty. Peering into the mirror, the red brunette and blue blonde delighted quietly in their original appearance, which they had begun to miss so much. The priestess laughed and twirled about while the diva jumped up and down clapping her hands together.

「福蒂！我們又變回自己了！」瑪蒂爾達喊道。「赫拉！」

“Futi! We’re ourselves again!” Matilda shouted. “Hela!”

「嘿，嘿！我又有我的鞋子了！」伊特福特喊道。「我全回來了！」

“Hey, hey! And I’ve got my shoes back!” Itfut yelled. “I’m all back!”

They spent a few minutes longer enjoying the fun but then stopped as if suddenly remembering something. They still didn’t know where they were. Looking at one another, the diva and the priestess silently climbed up onto the plinth in the shop window and looked around through the glass not daring yet to leave the shop.

Then, suddenly, loud techno music started playing and, in that instant, the mannequins in all the shop windows came alive, stepped down from their plinths and poured out into the gallery in a motley crowd. Moving in a kind of dance, they made a phantasmagoric march around the gallery’s entire circumference.

The shopping center was still submerged in semi-darkness but now it was filled with music and movement.

假人有各種不同的顏色：白色、黑色、米色，有些戴著假髮，有些沒有，它們的臉無動於衷。展示比基尼的有些沒有頭，手臂和腿的位置是殘肢。其他展示褲子的則缺少軀幹。缺少的身體部位似乎並沒有阻止這些假人跳舞，儘管這讓場景顯得可怕。總體來說，假人走秀給人一種驚人的、不祥的印象，他們的動作笨拙、機械且顛簸。

The mannequins were a whole variety of different colors: white, black, beige, some wearing wigs and some without, their faces motionless and impassive. Some of those displaying bikinis had no head and stumps in place of missing arms and legs. Others, those displaying trousers, were missing a torso. The absence of various body parts did not seem to stop the figures from dancing although it made for a horrible scene. All in all, the mannequin catwalk created an alarming, ominous impression, their movements awkward, mechanical and jerky.

歌后和女祭司愣住了。她們一動不動地看著整個場景，試圖不暴露自己。當音樂停止時，假人停止了舞蹈，開始向四面八方散去。有些走向商店，在櫃檯後面像店員一樣站著。其他的則模仿顧客挑選和試穿衣服。另一組在咖啡館裡坐在桌子後面，假裝在吃喝，而其他假人則為他們服務。還有一組在遊戲區裡，假裝在玩遊戲，有些打台球，有些打保齡球。其他的則在畫廊裡四處遊蕩。

The diva and the priestess froze. They watched the entire scene without moving an inch, trying not to give themselves away. When the music stopped, the mannequins stopped dancing and began to disperse in all directions. Some made for the shops taking up positions behind the counters like shop assistants. Others adopted the manner of shoppers choosing and trying on clothes. Another group arranged themselves in the cafe sitting behind the tables pretending to eat and drink while other mannequins served them. Another group positioned themselves in the play zone and make out that they were playing games, some billiards, others bowls. All the others simply wandered about the gallery.

「福蒂，他們在模仿真人！」瑪蒂爾達悄聲說。「他們做的一切都和我們去商場時一樣。你能想像嗎？」

“Futi, they’re copying real people!” Matilda whispered. “They’re doing everything exactly as we do, when we go to the mall. Can you imagine?”

「安靜，別動，」伊特福特回應。「讓我們再觀察他們一會兒。」

“Quiet, don’t move,” Itfut replied. “Let’s watch them for a bit longer.”

Aside from everything else, the mannequins were somehow communicating with each other. They would turn their heads towards each other giving out a loud, indistinct whisper, all the time their faces and lips remaining frozen as if in a stiff mask. The result was a cacophony of unintelligible, unconnected words coming from all sides, sometimes fading but then becoming louder again.

「福蒂，我們做點什麼吧，」瑪蒂爾達不耐煩地說。「我們不能永遠像雕像一樣站在這裡。」

“Futi, let’s do something,” said Matilda impatiently. “We can’t stand here like statues forever.”

「好吧，」伊特福特說。「讓我們試著離開商場。」

“Okay,” said Itfut. “Let’s try and leave the mall.

They stepped down from the plinth and made gingerly in the direction of the exit not knowing what to expect if they were spotted. The moment they entered the gallery area, all the mannequins stopped moving and went quiet. Then, as one, they turned sharply to face the friends and rushed towards then with blatant hostility.

歌后和女祭司都開始逃跑。假人們現在完全無聲，邁著不慌不忙但自信的步伐，伸出手臂朝逃跑者伸去，包括那些缺少軀幹和腿的假人。

The diva and the priestess both made a run for it. The mannequins, who were now completely silent, took unhurried but assured strides stretching their arms out towards the runaways, including the ones with missing torsos and legs.

「福蒂，你覺得他們想從我們這裡得到什麼？！」瑪蒂爾達問。「我不知道，」伊特福特一邊跑一邊回答。

“Futi, what do you think they want from us?!” asked Matilda. “I don’t know” Itfut replied as she ran.

「如果他們抓住我們會怎樣？」 「最好不要知道！」

“What will happen if they catch us?” “Best not to find out!”

「我們必須找到出口！我們在繞圈子！」

“We’ve got to find the exit! We’re going around in circles!”

追逐在她們周圍繼續，假人們無處不在。無論朋友們轉向哪個方向，都會被這些活生生卻又無生命的雕像撲向。躲避追捕者，歌后和女祭司跑遍了整個畫廊，但出口無處可尋。看起來這場噩夢永遠不會結束。

The chase continued all around them with mannequins appearing everywhere. In whatever direction the friends turned, they were launched at by animated and yet lifeless statues. Dodging their pursuers, the diva and the priestess ran the full length of the gallery, but the exit was nowhere to be found. It looked like the nightmare would never end.

Then came the critical moment. As if having planned it beforehand, the mannequins arranged themselves in rows on two sides of the gallery cutting off the path to retreat. Spreading out their arms, they formed a ring. The friends were trapped.

Noticing a small niche in the wall, the priestess took a dive towards it and dragged the diva along behind her.

“Tili, stand still!” Itfut whispered and with that she stood as still as she could. Matilda did not ask questions and did the same.

The mannequins were instantly confused. They started turning their heads to each side and mumbling indistinguishably to one another. There was clearly no point in continuing the chase anymore. The mannequins started wandering randomly in all directions, their arms outstretched in front of them as if they were blind. They even walked past the friends without noticing them, and finally dispersed in one direction, although not altogether abandoning the search.

「蒂莉，他們只有在我們移動時才能看到我們！」伊特福特悄聲說。「是的！」瑪蒂爾達輕聲回答。「你怎麼知道的？」 「純粹的直覺。」

“Tili, they can only see us when we’re moving!” whispered Itfut. “Yes!” Matilda replied quietly. “How did you work that out?” “Pure intuition.”

“What are we going to do now?” Move on to somewhere else?” “No, I want to try something else.”

The priestess closed her eyes focusing her attention and then she sharply opened them again and...

Everything around them stopped. The mannequin figures walking past stop as if in a freeze-frame. The entire scene froze and tiny, glistening flakes that mysteriously appeared out of nowhere hung suspended in the air, like snow that had suddenly stopped falling.

Matilda was the first to start moving again and emerge from her amazement. “Futi, what did you do?”

The friends stepped out of the niche in the wall and took a few steps through the gallery. The mannequins remained still.

“Something like this happened to us once before,” said Itfut. “Remember? It was when the dream stopped and the glamrocks froze.”

“That was a bit different to this though,” said Matilda. “They were still moving, just in very slow motion. There was some trick with time going on.”

The priestess pointed to the mannequin standing closest to them. She noticed something woven in the shape of a plait coming out from behind the mannequin’s head. It glowed with a white radiance and stopped roughly between the shoulders at which point it flowed into a fine, blue ray of light that ran vertically down into the floor. The same thing could be observed in the other mannequins, even those with missing limbs and those whose plait seemed to extend from the spine or the waist.

「福蒂！」瑪蒂爾達興奮地說。「你也有一個一樣的！」

“Futi!” Matilda said excitedly. “You’ve got one the same!”

“What? I’ve got one?” Itfut asked in surprise and suddenly, as if struck by lightning, she exclaimed, “Oh my Gods! You’ve got one, too!”

In that moment, the blue rays disappeared from both friends leaving just the glowing plaits.

Mannequin Catwalk

整個商場彌漫著死寂。那圓形的展廳籠罩在半暗的光線中，只有玻璃展示櫃裡那些靜止不動的蠟像微微發光。其中一個蠟像微微動了動——那個展示著黑色晚禮服、配有鑲鑽領圈和帽子的蠟像。它轉頭對著隔壁的蠟像開口說話，但那無表情、雪白的塑膠面孔絲毫沒有變化。

The mall was filled with deadly silence. The circular gallery was immersed in semi-darkness and only the motionless mannequins in glass showcases were lit, albeit very faintly. One of the mannequins stirred, the one displaying a dark evening dress with a diamond-studded collar and hat. It turned its head toward its neighbor and spoke, although the expressionless, white, plastic face made no change at all.

「Matilda！你把我們帶到哪裡去了？」

“Matilda! Where have you brought us?”

穿著連身褲、背後繫著一個格格不入的蝴蝶結的第二個蠟像，開始動起手腳，轉身面向第一個蠟像，卻仍以同樣呆板的面具般表情回應。

The second mannequin dressed in a jump suit with an incongruous bow tied to the back, started moving its hands and feet, and turning around to face the first mannequin, responded with the same mask-like expression.

「Futi！我搞錯了。我試圖讓我們回到屬於我們自己的蠟像內，但結果變成這樣了。」

“Futi! I got it slightly wrong. I tried to get us back into our own mannequins, but we ended up like this.”

「我們是誰？我們在哪裡？」

“Who are we? Where are we?”

“We’re literally mannequins and it looks like we’re in a clothing store.”

Both mannequins stepped down from the plinth and wandered up and down the racks and rails. It was a strange sight, if not downright disturbing — two mannequins moving and talking, their plastic, faces remaining completely motionless.

Matilda邊翻找著掛在欄杆上的西裝，尖叫道：「哇，好漂亮的衣服，得試穿看看！」

“Wow, nice things. Gotta try these on!” squealed Matilda rummaging through the suits hanging from the rails.

Itfut壓低了Matilda的興致，說：「Tili！你選的時機真好！我們得變回正常的樣子，換回我們自己的衣服。」

“Tili! You’ve picked a fine time!” said Itfut dampening Matilda’s enthusiasm. “We need to transform back into our normal appearance and our own clothes.”

「嗯，我覺得我看起來很正常，夠正常了，讓過路的購物者都羨慕地抬頭看我。」

“Well, I think I look normal. Normal enough for all the shoppers to look up at me enviously when they walk by.”

Matilda繼續隨心所欲地翻看那些西裝與洋裝，毫無顧慮；不久後，Itfut也跟著效仿，似乎被Matilda的好心情所感染。

Matilda continued looking through the suits and dresses without a care in the world and then Itfut started doing the same as if Matilda’s mood was catching.

“They might envy you, but they admire me!” Itfut said while straightening her snazzy hat. “See? How do I look?”

“Why are you dressed better than me?” Matilda suddenly answered aggressively. “I hate you!”

「原來是這樣啊，對吧？！」女祭司推了她一下，Matilda隨之踉蹌倒地，順勢撞翻了一個展示架；女高音爬起來後揚言反擊，揪扯著女祭司的裙子。隨後，女祭司也毫不示弱，奮力反撲，兩人你來我往，怒火激昂。

“So that’s how it is, is it?!” The priestess gave her friend a shove. Matilda stumbled and knocked over a rack as she fell. The diva picked herself back up and lashed out at the priestess tearing at her dress. The priestess began mauling back at her rival, no less wound up than she was.

「你竟敢碰我的蝴蝶結，你這賤貨！」Matilda失去理智地大喊。

“You just touched my bow, you slut!” Matilda yelled having lost all sense of self-control.

「我的鑽石裝飾的領圈簡直驚艷至極！」Itfut更大聲喊道，「你永遠無法看起來像我這般光彩照人，你這醜陋的母牛！」

“My diamond collar is simply stunning!” Itfut shouted even louder. “You’ll never look anything like as good as me, you ugly cow!”

“I’ll break your hand off!”

「哦，是嗎？那我就把你的頭扭下來！」

“Oh yeah? And I’ll twist your head off!”

說著，女祭司果斷將女高音的頭扭下，那顱項掉落在地，滾過整個地板；隨後，氣勢洶洶的女高音又猛扯下女祭司的手臂，狠狠地扔到一旁。兩人對彼此的損失毫不在意，以瘋狂的狂熱持續互相折磨；突然間，她們的怒火也像來時那般迅速消退。

With that, the priestess twisted the diva’s head off, which fell to the ground and rolled across the floor. With some force, the diva pulled off the priestess’s arm and lobbed it to one side. Paying no attention to their losses, they continued to torment each other with unfailing frenzy. Suddenly their fury subsided just as swiftly as it had appeared.

「好了，好了，我不需要爭個勝負，」Itfut聲音出乎意料地平靜。

“Okay, okay, I don’t need to win,” said Itfut her voice unexpectedly calm.

「只要是好的依賴關係(Dependent relationships)，關係才最重要，」Matilda回答，儘管她的頭還是缺失著。

“The relationship is more important, if it’s a good one,” answered Matilda, despite the fact that she was still missing her head.

「是啊，哪一場勝利都不值得拿一段好依賴關係(Dependent relationships)來作交換。你有我，我有你，這才是最重要的！」

“Yes, no victory is worth sacrificing a good relationship.” “You have me, and I have you, that’s all that matters.”

「對不起，我已經把你的頭裝回去了，你現在看起來煥然一新。」

“I’m sorry, I’ve put your head back on. You look good as new.”

「我也把你的手臂固定回來了，現在比以前更好了。」

“I’ve fixed your arm back on. It looks even better now than it did before.”

他們彼此整理著對方的衣服，做出一個似乎在和解的動作，儘管這舉措毫無意義，畢竟他們所有的衣裳早已被撕得粉碎。

They straightened each other’s clothes with a conciliatory, albeit useless gesture, since all their clothing was torn to shreds.

Itfut繼續說道：「仇恨是一種不錯的情緒，而漠不關心與冷漠才是真正的負面情感。」

“Hatred is a good feeling. Indifference and apathy are the really negative emotions,” Itfut continued.

「沒錯，仇恨真是很酷，」Matilda附和道。

“Yes, hatred is cool,” Matilda agreed.

“I hate you, which means I’m not indifferent to you, and that must mean that you aren’t indifferent to me either.”

“Well, consider that this time! Do you want me to rip your head off again, stuffed bird?”

They grabbed hold of each other again, toppled over, shrieking and rolling around on the floor and then stopped just as suddenly as they had started.

「Futi，我們到底在幹什麼？」當Matilda漸漸恢復清醒時，她問道。

“Futi, what are we doing?” Matilda was coming to her senses. “It’s a thin line between love and hate, Tili,” said Itfut.

「而且從恨還能回到愛，」Matilda說，「但我們何必抱著仇恨呢？」

“And from hate back to love,” said Matilda. “But what would we want with hate?”

Once again, they were about to start fighting but Itfut stopped suddenly and shook her head.

「Ilit！醒醒！」

“Ilit! Wake up!”

「你剛才叫我什麼？」／「記住你的第二個名字！」

“What did you call me?” “Remember your second name!”

「我是Ilit，而你是Tufti。你是Tufti，而我是Ilit！我們究竟怎麼了？」

“I’m Ilit and you are Tufti. You’re Tufti and I am Ilit! What is wrong with us?”

“We keep falling asleep. We’re drifting into the mannequins’ dream and forgetting who we really are. Say to yourself: I am me!”

「我是我！」Matilda猛然驚醒，隨即也徹底清醒過來，「Futi！這真是一場既厚重又泥濘的夢啊！」

“I am me!” Matilda gave a start and then woke up too. “Futi! What a thick, boggy dream that was!”

“Yes, it really sucks you in,” said Itfut. “And your conscious awareness gets clouded and lost. We must stay aware!”

“Oh yes!” Matilda said remembering suddenly. “When I was a cookie and you were halva, we were so empty and stupid but that was nothing compared to the mannequins. They’re completely braindead and nasty, too!”

“It’s more like they’re soulless.”

“But why are they so nasty? I never imagined they could be like that. And we behaved just like them!”

In that moment, both mannequins transformed fluidly into two eccentric-looking individuals. One was dressed in an ankle-length dress of dark-blue velvet and was wearing a neck collar studded with diamonds. Her face was covered in crimson war paint and the cheekbones beneath her green eyes were decorated with a row of white spots. Her black hair was cut into a bob. She was a priestess, scary and yet beautiful and graceful at the same time. The other figure was dressed in a dark-green jumpsuit and was wearing pink platforms. Her face was covered in blue face make-up and there was a huge pink bow attached to her lower back. Her hair was wild-looking and dyed light blue. She was a quintessential diva, or you could say, a larger than life doll but rather than having the normal, cute, doll-like prettiness, there was something extraordinary about her beauty. Peering into the mirror, the red brunette and blue blonde delighted quietly in their original appearance, which they had begun to miss so much. The priestess laughed and twirled about while the diva jumped up and down clapping her hands together.

「Futi！我們又回到自己了！」Matilda大喊道，「Hela！」

“Futi! We’re ourselves again!” Matilda shouted. “Hela!”

「嘿，嘿！而且我的鞋子也回來了！」Itfut喊道，「我全都回來了！」

“Hey, hey! And I’ve got my shoes back!” Itfut yelled. “I’m all back!”

他們又繼續享受了幾分鐘的歡樂，但隨即卻突然停下來，彷彿想起了什麼。他們仍不知自己身處何地。女高音與女祭司互相對視，默默爬上了店鋪櫥窗中的基座，小心翼翼地透過玻璃環顧四周，卻又不敢輕易離開店內。

They spent a few minutes longer enjoying the fun but then stopped as if suddenly remembering something. They still didn’t know where they were. Looking at one another, the diva and the priestess silently climbed up onto the plinth in the shop window and looked around through the glass not daring yet to leave the shop.

突然間，震耳欲聾的科技舞曲響起，在那一瞬間，所有櫥窗中的蠟像都活了過來，依次從基座上走下，混雜著各色群眾湧進展廳，隨著一種宛如舞蹈般的步伐，幻化般地沿著展廳的整個邊緣行進。

Then, suddenly, loud techno music started playing and, in that instant, the mannequins in all the shop windows came alive, stepped down from their plinths and poured out into the gallery in a motley crowd. Moving in a kind of dance, they made a phantasmagoric march around the gallery’s entire circumference.

購物中心依然籠罩在半暗之中，但現在卻充滿了音樂與動感。

The shopping center was still submerged in semi-darkness but now it was filled with music and movement.

這些蠟像呈現出各種不同的顏色：白色、黑色、米色，不少戴著假髮，有些則光禿禿，臉龐一動不動，毫無表情。有的展示比基尼的甚至連頭部都沒有，只有殘缺的手臂與腿部；另一些展示褲裝的則缺少軀幹。儘管如此，缺失了各種身體部位似乎並未妨礙它們縱情跳躍，儘管這情景令人毛骨悚然。整體而言，蠟像伸展台營造出一種令人不安、預示不祥的印象，它們的動作既尷尬又像機械般僵硬顫抖。

The mannequins were a whole variety of different colors: white, black, beige, some wearing wigs and some without, their faces motionless and impassive. Some of those displaying bikinis had no head and stumps in place of missing arms and legs. Others, those displaying trousers, were missing a torso. The absence of various body parts did not seem to stop the figures from dancing although it made for a horrible scene. All in all, the mannequin catwalk created an alarming, ominous impression, their movements awkward, mechanical and jerky.

女高音與女祭司頓時僵住，目不轉睛地注視著整個場景，努力不讓自己洩露破綻。當音樂戛然而止時，蠟像也隨之停止了舞動，開始向四面八方散開。有的朝向商店走去，佔據櫃檯後如同店員般的姿態；有的則模仿顧客挑選試穿衣服；另一組則在咖啡廳桌後坐下，假裝享用餐點，而其他蠟像則扮作服務生；還有一組則在遊戲區自顧自地玩耍，有的打撞球，有的打保齡球。其餘的蠟像則漫無目的地在展廳中徘徊。

The diva and the priestess froze. They watched the entire scene without moving an inch, trying not to give themselves away. When the music stopped, the mannequins stopped dancing and began to disperse in all directions. Some made for the shops taking up positions behind the counters like shop assistants. Others adopted the manner of shoppers choosing and trying on clothes. Another group arranged themselves in the cafe sitting behind the tables pretending to eat and drink while other mannequins served them. Another group positioned themselves in the play zone and make out that they were playing games, some billiards, others bowls. All the others simply wandered about the gallery.

「Futi，他們在模仿真實的人！」Matilda低聲道，「他們的一舉一動都跟我們逛商場時完全一樣，你能想像嗎？」

“Futi, they’re copying real people!” Matilda whispered. “They’re doing everything exactly as we do, when we go to the mall. Can you imagine?”

「安靜，別動，」Itfut回答，「我們再多看一會兒吧。」

“Quiet, don’t move,” Itfut replied. “Let’s watch them for a bit longer.”

Aside from everything else, the mannequins were somehow communicating with each other. They would turn their heads towards each other giving out a loud, indistinct whisper, all the time their faces and lips remaining frozen as if in a stiff mask. The result was a cacophony of unintelligible, unconnected words coming from all sides, sometimes fading but then becoming louder again.

「Futi，我們該做點什麼了，」Matilda不耐地說，「我們可不能永遠像雕塑一樣站在這裡！」

“Futi, let’s do something,” said Matilda impatiently. “We can’t stand here like statues forever.”

「好吧，」Itfut說道，「我們試著離開這個商場。」

“Okay,” said Itfut. “Let’s try and leave the mall.

他們從基座上小心翼翼地走下，向出口方向前進，卻不知若被發現會如何。當他們踏入展廳區瞬間，所有蠟像停止了動作，陷入死寂。隨後，它們齊齊轉身，銳利地對著這兩位朋友，懷著明顯的敵意迅速衝來。

They stepped down from the plinth and made gingerly in the direction of the exit not knowing what to expect if they were spotted. The moment they entered the gallery area, all the mannequins stopped moving and went quiet. Then, as one, they turned sharply to face the friends and rushed towards then with blatant hostility.

女高音與女祭司立刻展開逃跑，而那些現在完全寂靜的蠟像，則以悠然卻堅定的步伐追趕，伸出手臂攫取逃跑者，其中甚至有缺失軀幹與腿部的不完整者。

The diva and the priestess both made a run for it. The mannequins, who were now completely silent, took unhurried but assured strides stretching their arms out towards the runaways, including the ones with missing torsos and legs.

「Futi，你覺得他們究竟想從我們這裡得到什麼？！」Matilda喊道；「我不知道，」Itfut邊跑邊回答。

“Futi, what do you think they want from us?!” asked Matilda. “I don’t know” Itfut replied as she ran.

「若他們抓到我們，會怎樣？」

“What will happen if they catch us?” “Best not to find out!”

「我們必須找到出口！我們一直在原地打轉！」

“We’ve got to find the exit! We’re going around in circles!”

追逐在他們周圍持續上演，蠟像無處不在。無論這兩位朋友轉向哪個方向，都會被那些似乎活躍卻又毫無生氣的塑像沖向。女高音與女祭司拼命躲避追捕者，狂奔穿越整個展廳，卻怎也找不到出口。看來這場噩夢似乎永無止境。

The chase continued all around them with mannequins appearing everywhere. In whatever direction the friends turned, they were launched at by animated and yet lifeless statues. Dodging their pursuers, the diva and the priestess ran the full length of the gallery, but the exit was nowhere to be found. It looked like the nightmare would never end.

接著到了關鍵時刻，彷彿早有預謀，蠟像們在展廳兩側排成整齊的行列，封鎖了逃生路徑。它們張開雙臂，圍成一個環，將這兩位朋友牢牢困住。

Then came the critical moment. As if having planned it beforehand, the mannequins arranged themselves in rows on two sides of the gallery cutting off the path to retreat. Spreading out their arms, they formed a ring. The friends were trapped.

注意到牆上有一個小凹槽，女祭司迅速沖向那裡，並將女高音拉著一起跟隨。

Noticing a small niche in the wall, the priestess took a dive towards it and dragged the diva along behind her.

「Tili，別動！」Itfut低聲道，隨後她便盡可能一動不動。Matilda沒有多問，亦照樣保持靜止。

“Tili, stand still!” Itfut whispered and with that she stood as still as she could. Matilda did not ask questions and did the same.

蠟像們頓時顯得十分困惑，開始左右轉頭，互相咕噥著，彷彿已無繼續追逐的意義。它們便開始四處漫無目的地徘徊，雙臂伸向前，好似瞎子一般。甚至連朋友們從旁經過也毫不在意，最終散向一個方向，卻仍未完全放棄搜尋。

The mannequins were instantly confused. They started turning their heads to each side and mumbling indistinguishably to one another. There was clearly no point in continuing the chase anymore. The mannequins started wandering randomly in all directions, their arms outstretched in front of them as if they were blind. They even walked past the friends without noticing them, and finally dispersed in one direction, although not altogether abandoning the search.

「Tili，它們只有在我們動的時候才能看到我們！」Itfut悄聲說；Matilda靜靜回應：「是的！」接著她問：「你怎麼想到的？」Itfut回答：「純粹憑直覺。」

“Tili, they can only see us when we’re moving!” whispered Itfut. “Yes!” Matilda replied quietly. “How did you work that out?” “Pure intuition.”

「我們現在該怎麼做？是換個地方走走嗎？」

“What are we going to do now?” Move on to somewhere else?” “No, I want to try something else.”

女祭司閉上雙眼，集中精神，隨後猛地睜開眼睛……

The priestess closed her eyes focusing her attention and then she sharply opened them again and...

周遭的一切頓時停止了：走過的蠟像彷彿定格在畫面中，整個場景靜止不動，空中懸浮著幾許無緣無故出現的細小閃光碎片，宛如雪花突然停歇。

Everything around them stopped. The mannequin figures walking past stop as if in a freeze-frame. The entire scene froze and tiny, glistening flakes that mysteriously appeared out of nowhere hung suspended in the air, like snow that had suddenly stopped falling.

Matilda率先恢復行動，從驚愕中掙脫，「Futi，你做了什麼？」

Matilda was the first to start moving again and emerge from her amazement. “Futi, what did you do?”

「我停下了那部電影，」Itfut邊回答邊開始行動，「你是怎麼做到的？」

“I stopped the movie,” Itfut replied, also beginning to move. “How did you do it?”

「很簡單，我啟動了我的 trigger-jigger，然後想像周圍的一切都凍結了。」

“Simple, I activated my trigger-jigger and imagined that everything around us froze.”

「那就是說，蠟像的電影停止了，但我們沒有？我們可以在這裡隨意走動？太棒了！」

“So, that means the mannequin movie stopped but we didn’t? We can walk around here freely? Awesome!”

朋友們走出牆上的凹槽，穿過展廳走了幾步，而蠟像依然一動不動。

The friends stepped out of the niche in the wall and took a few steps through the gallery. The mannequins remained still.

「這樣的情況我們以前也有過，」Itfut說，「記得嗎？那是夢境停止、glamrocks 凍結的時刻。」

“Something like this happened to us once before,” said Itfut. “Remember? It was when the dream stopped and the glamrocks froze.”

「但那次稍有不同，」Matilda說，「它們當時還在移動，只是動作極為緩慢，好像有某種時間的戲法。」

“That was a bit different to this though,” said Matilda. “They were still moving, just in very slow motion. There was some trick with time going on.”

“Maybe the same thing is happening now? There weren’t any of these little flakes back then though... Hey! Look, what’s that?”

女祭司指向離他們最近的那個蠟像，注意到從蠟像後方隱約編織成辮子的物體正散發著白色光芒，停留於肩膀之間，隨後化作一道細密的藍光垂直射向地板。同樣的景象也在其他蠟像上出現，就算是那些缺失四肢或辮子從脊椎或腰部延伸出來的，也不例外。

The priestess pointed to the mannequin standing closest to them. She noticed something woven in the shape of a plait coming out from behind the mannequin’s head. It glowed with a white radiance and stopped roughly between the shoulders at which point it flowed into a fine, blue ray of light that ran vertically down into the floor. The same thing could be observed in the other mannequins, even those with missing limbs and those whose plait seemed to extend from the spine or the waist.

「Futi！」Matilda興奮地喊道，「你也有一個一樣的！」

“Futi!” Matilda said excitedly. “You’ve got one the same!”

「什麼？我也有？」Itfut驚訝地問道，隨後彷彿被雷擊般驚呼：「我的天啊！你也有！」

“What? I’ve got one?” Itfut asked in surprise and suddenly, as if struck by lightning, she exclaimed, “Oh my Gods! You’ve got one, too!”

他們此刻清楚地看到，彼此皆擁有閃爍著光芒的辮子，從中延伸出同樣的藍光直達地板。Itfut突然激動起來，大聲喊道：「Tili，我想起來了！」

They could see now that they both had glimmering plaits with the same blue rays extending down as far as the floor. “Tili, I’ve remembered!” shouted Itfut who had suddenly become extremely excitable.

「什麼？」

“What?”

「你現在的注意力聚焦在哪裡？」Matilda困惑地問道，「什麼？」

“What is your attention focused on, right now?” “What?” asked Matilda, perplexed.

「把注意力拉回到自己身上！對自己說：‘我是我！’」

“Bring your attention back to yourself! Say to yourself, ‘I am me!’” “I am me!” Matilda said repeating the words.

「我是我！」Itfut跟著重複。

“I am me!” Itfut repeated.

就在那一瞬間，兩人身上的藍光消失了，只留下依然閃光的辮子。

In that moment, the blue rays disappeared from both friends leaving just the glowing plaits.

Itfut再次喊道：「我明白了，我記起來了！」

“I understand it now. I remember!” Itfut shouted again.

「什麼？！你記起了什麼？」Matilda大聲叫道，「我知道那個 trigger-lever 是什麼了！」

“What?! What did you remember?” shouted Matilda. “I know what the trigger-lever is!”
