The moment the crazy ambulance had disappeared from view, the others gathered around Puscilla and started bombarding her with questions.

They’re more like fictional characters than real people. Imagine! It’s as if some author made them up. And I’ve met my own characters here, too, by the way.

“Let’s leave our personalities out of this, shall we,” said Brunhilda. “We’ve all got one and they’re all a bit on the exotic side to say the least. What I really want to know is why don’t these people know who they are? What does it mean?”

“Eejit, do you know who you are?” asked Brunhilda.

“Your Majesty, at the risk of behaving like a fictional character, I’d have to say that I’d prefer to avoid having to answer the question, too.”

For a moment there was complete silence. Eejit, who had the reputation of never being stuck for a response was probably lost for words for the first time in his life.

In front of their very eyes, Cow was transformed into an attractive-looking, plump woman with ginger hair dressed in an orange knee-length dress and black garish shoes. The outfit was accessorized with large, blue beads at the neck and wrists. Cow’s wings had vanished into thin air. Meanwhile, Submarine was transformed into a frivolous- looking blonde dressed in a yellow trouser suit, but she was wearing the same orange boots as before. Both newly appearing young women gazed about them looking totally perplexed, as were their companions. Despite the fundamental changes in their appearance, they were still the same beings somehow unmistakably recognizable as Orange Cow and Yellow Submarine.

“Right,” said Brunhilda breaking the silence. “Now we have four werewolves in the team. Fabulous!”

“Oh, something weird is happening to me!” Submarine exclaimed. “Pinch me!” Eejit instantly fulfilled Submarine’s request.

“Well you did say to pinch you. You look much better like that, by-golly. Anyone else needs a pinch? Except me, of course.”

“I’m not that surprised actually, for some reason,” said Cow. “I’ve always had this knowledge about myself... or imagined myself like this... I don’t know exactly.”

“So, which is it, you know, or you don’t know?” Brunhilda asked.

“I can’t say I know with total certainty as I don’t remember the past and I don’t understand the present.”

“And now you, Beast, do you know who you are?”

“Well, yes and no, my queen.” Beast spoke finally having kept silent up until now.

“You’ve already said that. What does ‘yes and no’ mean?”

“So,” said Brunhilda summing up, “what have we got? We don’t know who we are or where we came from. But we do know why we came. Our goal is the lid, right?”

My sword and everything else are still there,” she said, placing her hand on the weapon hidden beneath her skirt. The queen was wearing a medieval-style dress made of rough cloth and her long, brown hair was braided into a plait, a plain gold hoop crowning her head. Everything about Eejit was the same, too. He was green like Shrek and wore a green shapeless hoodie. He looked a total barbarian, the only difference being that he always wore a pair of sunglasses.

“Eejit, do you still have your eloquence?”Brunhilda asked. “I dare to hope so, Your Majesty.”

“Thank you, all of you!” said Puscilla happily. “That’s just moggy-marvellous! Only you won’t abandon me, will you?”

Do You Know Who You Are?

就在那輛瘋狂的救護車從視線中消失的瞬間，其他人便蜂擁至Puscilla身邊，不斷向她拋出各種問題。

The moment the crazy ambulance had disappeared from view, the others gathered around Puscilla and started bombarding her with questions.

「不得不承認，哦，奇蹟中的奇蹟，你竟然讓我這個見多識廣、早已不輕易驚訝的人也感到震驚，」Eejit說道。

“I have to admit, oh miracle of miracles, that you surprised even me, someone who has been surprised by so much, I stopped being surprised long ago,” said Eejit.

「你是怎麼做到的？」Cow問道，「你做了什麼？」Submarine緊接著問。

“How did you do it?” asked Cow. “What did you do?” asked Submarine.

「你說你創造並消滅虛構角色，這到底是什麼意思？」Brunhilda追問。

“What did you mean when you said that you created and eliminated fictional characters?” asked Brunhilda.

「自從我成為作家以來，」Puscilla回答，「我深信書中寫下的事物常常會在現實中顯現，而這對這個在地現實尤其如此。你寫下什麼，幾乎都會成真。」

“Since becoming a writer,” Puscilla answered, “I’ve become convinced that things written in books often manifest in physical reality and it’s particularly true of this local reality. Whatever you write, practically everything comes true.”

“What do you mean, ‘this local reality’?” asked Brunhilda.

「你們難道不是本地人嗎？你們不懂嗎？」Puscilla驚訝地問，「啊！我到底在說什麼！當然，你們不是這裡的人。那麼，你們到底從哪來的？」

“Aren’t you from here? Don’t you know?” asked Puscilla in surprise. “Ah! But what am I saying! Of course, you’re not from here. So, where are you from?”

As it turned out, this question caused some confusion among the general company.

「你是說，我們到底從哪裡來？我的意思是，我們到底是從哪裡來的？」Submarine自語道。

“How do you mean, where are we from? I mean, where are we from?” said Submarine to himself.

「嗯，我們就是從我們自己的地方來的……」Cow回答。

“Well, we’re from the place we’re from...” said Cow.

「Eejit，快說，說清楚。告訴她我們從哪裡來。」Brunhilda說，她自己一時也無法回答卻不願意露出馬腳。

“Eejit, go on, articulate. Tell her where we’re from.” Brunhilda said, at a loss to answer the question herself but not wanting to show it.

「嗯，這不是顯而易見嗎？」Eejit一邊說，一邊隨手做了個模糊的手勢，「我們就是從那邊來的。」看來這問題也讓他一時摸不著頭腦。

“Well, it’s obvious isn’t it?” said Eejit making a vague gesture with his hand. “We’re from over there.” He too was thrown by the question it seemed.

「我的主，」Puscilla轉向Beast說，「你能回答這個問題嗎？」

“My lord,” said Puscilla turning to Beast, “Might you be able to answer?”

「是，也不是，」Beast沉思著說，「我們出發的目的是找出那懸掛在我們頭上的‘蓋子’究竟是什麼。但一切都顯得很奇怪……我竟然記不起來我們最初是從哪裡出發的。我的腦子一片混沌……」

“Yes and no,” said Beast thoughtfully. “We set off with the aim of finding out about the lid that is hanging over us. But it’s all very strange... I can’t actually remember where we set out from. My mind’s all a bit of a fog...”

「看來我們誰都記不起來了，」Brunhilda說，「這或許與我們現在所在的地方有所關聯。也許，Puscilla，你能向我們解釋一下？」

“It looks like none of us can remember,” said Brunhilda. “It might be somehow connected to where we are now. Maybe you can explain it to us, Puscilla?”

“I don’t really understand myself, where I am or how I got here,” Puscilla replied. “All I know is that this world... somehow is not real.”

“What do you mean ‘isn’t real’?” said the others in amazement.

“Well, it’s kind of moggy... How can I put it... I feel like I’ve ended up in a puppet show. It’s as if it does not exist of itself and is being played out somehow. And the people here, it’s like they aren’t really real. They’re more like puppets.”

「怎麼說，像木偶？」Brunhilda問道，「真的是這樣——他們根本不知道自己是誰。」 「真不見得？」Submarine驚訝地接著問。

“In what way like puppets?” asked Brunhilda. “Literally. They don’t know who they are.” “They don’t?” asked Submarine in surprise.

“No. They don’t know their own self. It’s as if they’re being directed by someone. Puppets in a puppet theatre don’t know their own self either. Naturally, they act like ordinary people but there’s something wrong with them. It’s like they are mentally able but not entirely aware. You must have noticed it yourselves, haven’t you?”

「嗯，是的，我們確實注意到了一些異樣，」Eejit說，「我們多少有所感觸……可以說這裡的人似乎完全缺乏自己的主見。他們腦子清醒，但同時又輕易被他人牽著走，雖然這樣做未必總是容易的。」

“Well, yes, we did notice something,” said Eejit. “We do have some notion... You could say that the people here seem to be completely lacking in any notions of their own. They’re in their right mind but at the same time, they can be easily wound round someone else’s little finger, although that might not always be easy to achieve.”

「正是如此！」Puscilla肯定道，「他們並非完全有自覺！如果我不是作家，可能很難給他們一個合適的稱呼，但現在我知道了。」

“That’s exactly it!” Puscilla confirmed. “They’re not fully consciously aware! If I weren’t a writer, I would struggle to know what to call them but now I know.

「他們與其說是真人，不如說更像虛構角色。想想看！彷彿某位作者憑空創造了他們。而順帶一提，我這裡也遇到了屬於我筆下的角色。」

They’re more like fictional characters than real people. Imagine! It’s as if some author made them up. And I’ve met my own characters here, too, by the way.

「整個經歷真是震撼極了！有機會我一定細細說來。」

The whole experience was a huge shock! I’ll tell you about it sometime.”

「我可不想顯得失禮，」Cow打斷，但隨即補充，「不過Puscilla，你不覺得你自己也可能有點問題嗎，哪怕只是一點點？」

“I don’t want to seem impolite,” Cow interrupted, but don’t you think Puscilla that there might also be something wrong with you, even just a little bit?”

「你是指這些嗎？」Puscilla一邊說著，一邊摸著自己的尾巴和耳朵。

“Are you referring to these?” Puscilla asked touching her tail and ears.

「部分是這樣。你表達方式並不完全正常，而且你確實有一些可以說頗為特別的習慣——如果你不介意我這麼說的話。」

“Partly. The manner in which you express yourself is not entirely normal and you have what one might call interesting habits, if you don’t mind my saying so.”

“My manner and habits and completely catty, I agree but there’s not much I can do about it. It’s my personality.”

「我們還是把個性問題撇開吧，」Brunhilda說，「每個人都有個性，而且說實話都帶點異國風情。但我真正想知道的是，這些人怎麼會不知道自己是誰？這到底意味著什麼？」

“Let’s leave our personalities out of this, shall we,” said Brunhilda. “We’ve all got one and they’re all a bit on the exotic side to say the least. What I really want to know is why don’t these people know who they are? What does it mean?”

「就像我之前說的，他們彷彿並非完全有意識。他們看似在思索自己的行為，卻又不見得完全清醒，也無法真正解釋自己的舉動。他們就像木偶，任人牽引。」

“It’s like I said, it’s as if they were somehow not entirely conscious. They look like they’re thinking about what they’re doing and yet they’re not consciously aware and can’t really account for their actions. They’re being directed like puppets.”

“This is all very strange.”

「這不僅奇怪，甚至有點詭異。我遇到的每一個人，我都會問：‘你知道你自己是誰嗎？’」

“It’s not just strange, it’s eery. I ask everyone I meet, ‘Do you know who you are?’”

“Why do that?”

“To try and find at least one person who is consciously aware.” “And have you?”

“No, there’s no-one like that here. You’re the first.” “And how do they normally reply?”

「他們不回答。他們會不擇手段地迴避這個問題，然後變得惱火和憤怒。」

“They don’t. They’ll do anything to avoid answering the question and they get irritated and angry.”

「那你為什麼不問我們呢？」Brunhilda問道，繼續向Puscilla連連追問，明顯感到憂慮。

“Why haven’t you asked us then?” asked Brunhilda who continued to quiz Puscilla and was clearly concerned.

「因為你們知道自己是誰，不是嗎？我一眼就能看出你們和他們不一樣。再者，我在這裡認識我的主已經很久了。」

“Because you know who you are, don’t you? I could sense straight away that you’re different to them. And aside from that, I’ve known my lord here for a very long time.”

“But that’s what bothers me. I don’t think I can say I know who I am.”

「得了吧！你說你不知道自己是誰是什麼意思？」Puscilla驚訝得目瞪口呆。

“Come on! What do you mean you can’t say who you are?” Puscilla froze open- mouthed in surprise.

「Eejit，你知道你自己是誰嗎？」Brunhilda問。

“Eejit, do you know who you are?” asked Brunhilda.

「陛下，冒著像虛構角色般回答的風險，我倒是寧願也不回答這個問題。」

“Your Majesty, at the risk of behaving like a fictional character, I’d have to say that I’d prefer to avoid having to answer the question, too.”

一時間，現場陷入了完全的沉默。向來以不會語塞聞名的Eejit，這大概是他人生中第一次無言以對。

For a moment there was complete silence. Eejit, who had the reputation of never being stuck for a response was probably lost for words for the first time in his life.

「所以，我不是唯一一個這樣的人。那你呢，Submarine，你知道你自己是誰嗎？」

“So, I’m not the only one. What about you, Submarine, do you know who you are?”

「我怎麼會不知道自己是誰？當然，我知道我是誰！」 「那麼，你究竟能說你知道什麼？」

“How could I not know who I am? Of course, I know who I am!” “So, what exactly can you say you know?”

“我是Yellow Submarine！” “就這樣嗎？”

“I’m Yellow Submarine!” “That’s it?”

「嗯，對……就這樣。但……？」 「那你呢，Cow？」

“Um, well, yes...that’s it. But...?” “And you, Cow?”

「我覺得我可以說，我對自己很了解。」

“I think I can say that I know myself.”

「等等！等等！我突然想起點什麼了！」Submarine喧嚷著，但隨後陷入深思，然後沉默下來。

“Wait! Wait! I am remembering something!” Submarine fussed but then became thoughtful and fell silent.

Cow had also drifted into reverie. And then another transformation took place, this time involving these two of the casting crew. In front of their very eyes, Cow was transformed into an attractive-looking, plump woman with ginger hair dressed in an orange knee-length dress and black garish shoes. The outfit was accessorized with large, blue beads at the neck and wrists. Cow’s wings had vanished into thin air. Meanwhile, Submarine was transformed into a frivolous- looking blonde dressed in a yellow trouser suit, but she was wearing the same orange boots as before. Both newly appearing young women gazed about them looking totally perplexed, as were their companions. Despite the fundamental changes in their appearance, they were still the same beings somehow unmistakably recognizable as Orange Cow and Yellow Submarine.

「對，」Brunhilda打破沉默說，「現在我們團隊裡有四隻狼人了。太精彩了！」

“Right,” said Brunhilda breaking the silence. “Now we have four werewolves in the team. Fabulous!”

「哦，我感覺自己身上發生了什麼奇怪的事情！」Submarine驚叫，「捏我一下！」Eejit立刻滿足了Submarine的要求。

“Oh, something weird is happening to me!” Submarine exclaimed. “Pinch me!” Eejit instantly fulfilled Submarine’s request.

「哎呀！」

“Ow!”

「你自己說過要被捏嘛。這樣你看起來好多了，真是妙極了。還有誰需要被捏？當然，除了我。」

“Well you did say to pinch you. You look much better like that, by-golly. Anyone else needs a pinch? Except me, of course.”

「其實我倒是不覺得太奇怪，說不清為什麼，」Cow說，「一直以來，我對自己有這樣的認識……或者說，我一直這樣想像自己……我也說不上來到底是怎麼回事。」

“I’m not that surprised actually, for some reason,” said Cow. “I’ve always had this knowledge about myself... or imagined myself like this... I don’t know exactly.”

「那究竟是怎樣？你是知道，還是不知道？」Brunhilda問道。

“So, which is it, you know, or you don’t know?” Brunhilda asked.

「我無法百分之百肯定，因為我不記得過去，也無法完全理解現在。」

“I can’t say I know with total certainty as I don’t remember the past and I don’t understand the present.”

「那你呢，Beast，你知道你自己是誰嗎？」

“And now you, Beast, do you know who you are?”

「嗯，是也不是，我的女王。」Beast終於開口，之前他一直保持沉默。

“Well, yes and no, my queen.” Beast spoke finally having kept silent up until now.

「你早就這樣說過了。‘是也不是’到底怎麼個意思？」

“You’ve already said that. What does ‘yes and no’ mean?”

「我一生經歷過無數次變形，我都記得那些變化，但這一次，我感覺自己彷彿新生了。也許不是重生，而更像是一種顯化。這種感覺非常奇異，就像我同時知道自己是誰，又似乎完全不知道。」

“I’ve experienced many transformations in my life. I remember all of them but this time, now, I feel like I have been born anew. Not reborn perhaps so much as manifested. It’s a very strange feeling. It’s like I know who I am and at the same time, I don’t.”

「那你們其他人呢，大家都感覺如何？」Puscilla問道。

“And the rest of you, how are you all feeling?” asked Puscilla.

「我覺得自己就像一張空白的紙，」女王說，「我只知道我是女王Brunhilda，但除此之外我對自己一無所知，也不記得從何時起失去了其他任何認識。」

“I feel like a blank sheet,” said the queen. “All I know is that I am Queen Brunhilda but that’s all I can say about myself. And I don’t remember when I stopped knowing anything else about myself.”

「看吧！我也一樣！」Submarine驚叫道，「好像我只是剛剛突然出現在這裡，卻完全不知道自己從何而來。」

“There! It’s the same with me!” Submarine exclaimed. “It’s as if I only just appeared right here and now, and I have no idea wherefrom.”

「我唯一能說的就是，我就是我，」Cow說，「僅此而已，沒有更多。」

“All I can say is that I am me,” said Cow, “but that’s it, nothing more.”

「那麼，」Brunhilda總結道，「我們到底怎樣？我們既不知道自己是誰，也不清楚來自何處，但我們知道自己為何而來——我們的目標就是那個‘蓋子’（Life line）吧？」

“So,” said Brunhilda summing up, “what have we got? We don’t know who we are or where we came from. But we do know why we came. Our goal is the lid, right?”

「是的，是的！」

“Yes, yes!”

「我們想要查明那究竟是什麼，以及它為何出現在那裡。而我們中有三人曾經經歷變形（Induced shift）。如果我沒記錯，只有Eejit和我保留了原本的面貌；我的劍和其他一切都還在呢。」她邊說邊把手放在藏在裙底的武器上。女王身穿一襲由粗布製成的中世紀風格長裙，紮著一條棕色長辮，頭上戴著一個簡單的金色環。Eejit則依然如故，他全身一片綠意，猶如Shrek般，穿著一件無定形的綠色連帽衫，看起來完全像個野蠻人，唯一的區別是他總是戴著一副太陽眼鏡。

“We want to find out what it is and what it’s doing there. And three of us have experienced a metamorphosis. If I’m not mistaken, only Eejit and I have retained out former appearance. My sword and everything else are still there,” she said, placing her hand on the weapon hidden beneath her skirt. The queen was wearing a medieval-style dress made of rough cloth and her long, brown hair was braided into a plait, a plain gold hoop crowning her head. Everything about Eejit was the same, too. He was green like Shrek and wore a green shapeless hoodie. He looked a total barbarian, the only difference being that he always wore a pair of sunglasses.

During the expedition Submarine had constantly badgered him saying, “Take those glasses off! The lid’s blocking the sun out, you moron!” and Eejit would reply, “The radiance of my eyes carries enlightenment which will blind those who wander helplessly in the dark.”

「你戴著那副眼鏡看起來真是個徹頭徹尾的笨蛋！」 「是的，但那笨蛋可是有權威的。」

“You look a complete idiot in them!” “Yes, but an idiot with authority.”

「那你穿那件荒唐的長袍又是為了什麼？你是在扮演Osho嗎？」

“And what are you wearing that ridiculous robe for? Are you playing Osho?”

「我只能謙卑地說：與我共度的時光會讓你獲得那神奇的頓悟時刻，而且這也是莫大的榮幸。」

“There is only one thing I can humbly say to that: time spent with me will bring you a magical moment of enlightenment and what’s more it is a great honor.”

「啞巴去吧，滾蛋！」

“Yeah right, go to hell!”

「Eejit，你那口才還在嗎？」Brunhilda問道，「我真敢希望如此，陛下。」

“Eejit, do you still have your eloquence?”Brunhilda asked. “I dare to hope so, Your Majesty.”

「好吧，重點在這裡：我們究竟如何找回那些我們對自己一無所知的部分？」

“Okay. The key thing is this: how can we reclaim the things we don’t know about ourselves?”

「我知道你是誰！」Puscilla說，「怎麼會呢？你從哪裡認識我的？」

“I know who you are!” said Puscilla. “How? Where do you know me from?”

「我曾經讀過關於你的記載。陛下，你可是個活生生的傳奇；Orange和Submarine也都是赫赫有名的角色。而我自古以來就認識我的主，在你們當中，唯一我尚未有幸見面的是Eejit。」

“I read about you. Your Majesty, you are a living legend. Orange and Submarine are also famous characters. And I’ve known my lord since the beginning of time. Eejit is the only one among you whom I have not yet had the honor of meeting.”

「因為我的榮耀總是謙遜地隨行，不敢越雷池一步，」Eejit說。

“That is because that my glory follows me modestly not daring to outstep me,” Eejit stated.

「那意味著我們也不是真實的？」Brunhilda問。「不！你們真實無疑（obvipuss）！」Puscilla回答，「但依你所說，我們卻是虛構角色。」

“So, that means that we aren’t real either?” asked Brunhilda. “No! It’s totally obvipuss that you’re real!” replied Puscilla. “But from what you’re saying, we’re fictional characters.”

“You are real because you’re capable of asking yourselves that question and because you are self-aware i.e. you can say, ‘I am me’ or ‘I am my own self’ and that proves that you are real individuals and not fictional characters.”

“Do you remember you said that you would write the local characters down and make them disappear? How does that work?”

「非常簡單：當你在書中塑造他們的形象時，他們就得以物質化；而當你把他們從某一情節中剔除時，他們便會被清算（liquidated），從舞台上消失。」

“Very simply. When you create their image in a book, they materialize and when you strike them out of any given plot, they are liquidated and leave the stage.

「這正是所謂的貓式魔法（catty-magic）的一切奧妙所在……」

That’s the catty-magic of it all...”

「哇塞！」Submarine驚呼，「那你能把我們也從演員名單中抹去嗎？」

Wowzaz!” Submarine exclaimed. “So, can you write us out of the casting crew, too?”

「你怎麼能想出那樣的主意！不行！我可想與你們保持貓咪般的友好關係，事實上正好相反。我只是想問，你是否考慮讓我加入你們的幫派。我也很擔心那個蓋子（Life line）。」

“How could you even think such a thing! No! I want to be on feline-friendly terms with you. Quite the opposite in fact. I wanted to ask if you would consider letting me join your gang. I’m worried about the lid, too.”

「那為什麼你就不能直接寫下那蓋子消失了呢？」Cow問。

“So why can’t you just write that the lid disappears?” asked Cow.

「我試過這麼做，但並沒奏效。處理現實比處理這些在地角色要難得多。你能讓我同行嗎？」

“I’ve tried that, but it didn’t work. It’s a bit trickier dealing with reality than it is with these local characters. Will you let me come with you?”

「當然！我們怎能不帶上一隻像你這樣的貓——Puscilla呢？你可以成為我們的貓樣Puscilla（Catty-Puscilla）,」Eejit說。

“Of course! How can we not take a cat, a Puscilla like you with us? You can be our Catty-Puscilla,” said Eejit.

“And since when have you been the one in charge around here?” Brunhilda objected.

“Your Majesty, humbly at your service.”

“My Queen,” said Beast joining the conversation, “I too request that you agree.” “Me, too!” said Cow.

“Me, too!” said Submarine.

女王沉思了片刻。

The Queen was thoughtful for a moment.

「我將大有用處！」Puscilla繼續說，「比如我可以成為你們的貓樣情報專家。」

“I will come in handy!” Puscilla continued. “I can be your catty-intel specialist, for example.”

「我們的什麼東西？」Brunhilda問。

“Our whatty-who?” asked Brunhilda.

「我可以進行貓咪間的間諜行動，參與貓樣間諜任務。我能巧妙地從任何人那裡套出秘密，甚至在必要時執行‘Puscilla式殺戮’。」

“I can carry out pussy-espionage, take part in pussy-spying operations. I can catty-charm secrets out of anyone and even Puscilla-kill if necessary.”

“What do you mean, Puscilla-kill?” laughed Brunhilda.

“Well, if you’ll excuse the language, it’s when you fling, hoodwink, bewitch and spin heads.”
