Asking Questions Inside the Dream

1/83

The diva and the priestess entered the megalith leaving the newly initiated sisters waiting outside.

2/83

“Futi!” exclaimed Matilda once they were alone. “Now I understand!” “Understand what, Tili-Tili?”

3/83

“Everything! I understand the true value of asking questions and the significance of the questions you were asking. When I’m not asking questions, it is like I’m in a stupor or a daydream and you know why?”

4/83

“Why, why, Tili-Tili?”

5/83

“Because I’m just passively accepting whatever’s happening even if it’s inconvenient to me or I don’t like it. It does not even occur to me to stop and ask what’s really happening to me and my environment. I just let the current take me or at best, helplessly flounder about in its waters.”

6/83

“Exactly, Tili. Passively accepting whatever is happening means taking it all for granted. And taking something for granted means accepting it as a possibility, as something which is likely to occur. And when you accept things, you inevitably plunge right into the dream. Do you remember we were talking about ‘conceding and not conceding’? Once you’re in the dream, you’re powerless. Anything can happen to you, however absurd, because you have conceded and are taking circumstances for granted.”

7/83

“Exactly, Futi! I don’t ask questions when I’m dreaming. I have no sense of my own will. It’s as if I’m no longer myself, no longer in charge of my own life and am just being led by the dream. And it is the same in waking life just to a lesser degree.”

8/83

“Not much less, though,” said Itfut.

9/83

“I was going to say,” Matilda continued, “that it’s practically the same. It’s not a matter of whether I like what is happening or not, and even whether it suits me or not. The point is that once I accept the possibility that a set of circumstances could feasibly represent my reality, those circumstances can in fact happen to me, whether I want them to or not.”

10/83

“Precisely. When you concede to circumstances the film takes control and you’re transformed into the equivalent of a character in a movie.”

11/83

“But what I’ve finally recognized is when I am conceding. It’s the moment I stop asking questions! It turns out that to wake up you have to start asking questions: ‘where am I?’ ‘What’s going on with me?’ ‘Is this my reality?’ And most importantly, ‘am I being my own person right now or am I being led by others?’ Am I acting independently or am I being directed by the movie?”

12/83

“You’ve got it now, Tili.”

13/83

“Now for our thoughts. I get the question ‘who are you?’ but I liked the other question the most, ‘who do you belong to?’ It’s the kind of stupid question a stupid adult asks when they find a lost child.”

14/83

“It is pretty stupid.” Itfut laughed.

15/83

“It really is, I mean, an adult asks a child, ‘who do you belong to?’ and how’s the poor kid supposed to respond? ‘I belong to my mummy and daddy’ or, ‘I’m a national treasure’?”

16/83

“What, what? What’s a national treasure?”

17/83

“It’s what people on television craftily call things that don’t belong to us.”

18/83

“I don’t understand, I don’t understand!” said Itfut puzzled.

19/83

“It doesn’t matter. It would take too long to explain. So,” continued Matilda,

20/83

“when a child realizes they are lost, they panic, and panic is the deepest kind of dream you can have. When you’re panicking, you aren’t capable of doing anything except rush about crying and screaming.”

21/83

“Have you ever been lost?”

22/83

“Yes, once. I burst into tears and threw the kind of strop only a proper little madam can. And then someone came up to me and asked, ‘whose kid are you? Who do you belong to?’”

23/83

“And how did you respond?”

24/83

“I did not say anything, naturally. I just carried on crying and screaming. But I remember thinking, ‘what kind of ridiculous question is that?’ To me it was obvious that I did not belong to anyone! I was my own self. I did not give it any more thought at the time. It’s only now I realize the true meaning of the question.”

25/83

“Which is...?”

26/83

“You already know the answer. People who ask kids that question have no idea what they are really asking but when you put the question to the glamrock and the nun, you knew exactly what you were asking! It is all about whether you can act independently with conscious awareness or whether you are controlled by the movie. In other words, can you own yourself and be your own self or not?”

27/83

“Quite, and the answer to the question is, ‘I don’t belong to anyone. I am my own person’, if of course a person has woken up.”

28/83

“I knew the right answer back then, but it did not help me wake up from the dream because I did not understand its full significance,” said Matilda. “It’s all about who’s running the show in your life, you or some external script.”

29/83

“More specifically, where are you focusing your attention, on yourself or on the movie?” added Itfut. “And the reason you did not wake up back then is because you did not question what was happening.”

30/83

“Right! I just carried on crying and screaming, when all I had to do was stop and ask myself, ‘has anything really so terrible happened? My mother and I have lost sight of one another temporarily, but would my mummy ever abandon me? No! she’ll find me very soon. In the meantime, I’ll just wander up and down a bit and calmly observe what’s happening because that’s what I’ve decided!’ That’s what it means to wake up!”

31/83

“You’re describing an event that took place in childhood, but the same thing applies in adult life, too, both in dreaming and in waking.”

32/83

“Exactly, Futi! It’s amazing! Really cool.” “What? What’s ‘cool’?”

33/83

“It’s like ‘great’, ‘awesome’! How amazing to be able to understand all this stuff! I had no idea!”

34/83

“It isn’t enough to understand it though. You have to be able to apply it and that takes constant practice.”

35/83

“Yes, I remember, the observers and the characters, state of awareness and the Witness,” recited Matilda as if in class. “In order to become an observer, you have to develop the opposite habit. Now, as soon as anything comes up, instead of getting immersed in my passions and losing myself in the dream, I’ll wake up and start taking conscious action. The slightest waft that something is ‘off’ in my personal space and I’ll make myself wake up. The moment I get a sense of anything, I’ll activate my Witness and start asking questions. Now I own myself and am my own self.”

36/83

“Well done, Matilda!” said Itfut praising her like a pupil. “And can you remember what the most important question is? What do you have to do to awaken your inner witness?”

37/83

“Pay attention to where I’m placing my attention and to whom it belongs: it is with me or have I given it away to the movie. Basically, you have to track reality and as soon as anything pops up, instantly activate the inner witness. If something goes wrong, you have to be able to see reality and yourself within it.”

38/83

“And the same goes for when things are going right. You have to see more often like the seers in my world do: you have to be able to say, ‘I see myself and I see reality’.”

39/83

“To avoid turning into a glamrock?” “Yes, yes, that too.”

40/83

“It’s strange,” said Matilda. “They were savages, but they transformed instantly into Carmelites. How do you explain something like that?”

41/83

“Yes, it’s strange,” Itfut agreed. “It must be a quirk of the mirror. Everything is bizarre in the dream space. So, have you decided what you’re going to do with them?”

42/83

“So far their transformation is purely external. In essence, they’re the same old glamrocks. They haven’t fully woken up yet. We need to show them the difference between good and evil.”

43/83

“How?”

44/83

“You’ll see. I’ll switch on my skills for entertaining the masses. First, though, we should feed them. They must be starving.”

45/83

Matilda approached the black cylinder, adjusted her bow with the usual movement and whispered something. Segments immediately began to emerge from the cylinder holding baskets of flat breads and baked fish, large jugs and ceramic cups and plates. Itfut watched with interest and peered into the baskets.

46/83

“Tili, why bread and fish?” “It’s a classic!”

47/83

“What, what is? In what sense?”

48/83

“You’ll see.”

49/83

“And what’s in the jugs, Tili? It’s not that happy drink again is it?” “No, it’s grape juice, also a classic.”

50/83

The diva and the priestess began carrying the food outside. Itfut prudently materialized a large tablecloth to lay the food upon. The nuns walked up and observed the preparations with curiosity pointing to things and discussing it all among themselves. Once the whole à la carte service was transferred to the tablecloth, Matilda gave the order.

51/83

“Right, darling sisters, come and sit down!”

52/83

The nuns obediently arranged themselves in a large circle and the diva and the priestess sat at the center next to the covered tablecloth.

53/83

“Now, we’re going to learn a special action,” said Matilda addressing them all, “it’s called ‘doing something nice for others’.”

54/83

“Others? Nice?” the nuns asked. “Why others? The others aren’t one of us!” “Who are you calling ‘others’?”

55/83

“Those who might arrive!”

56/83

“And what will you do with them if they do?” “Eat them!”

57/83

“And how many have you already eaten?” “None! None!”

58/83

“And why is that?” asked Itfut.

59/83

“We plan to eat them but when we’re about to start they leave instantly,” Mana-lisa answered on behalf of the group.

60/83

“What do you mean, they leave? Where do they go?” asked Matilda.

61/83

“They disappear. One minute they’re there, and the next ‘poof’, they’re gone.”

62/83

“I see,” said Itfut. “The others are dreamers. They appear here when they are having a dream. It’s the standard nightmare: the dreamer is attacked by savages and just as they are about to be eaten alive, the dreamer wakes up from the terror.”

63/83

“Why do you treat aliens like this?” Matilda asked the nuns. “It’s how it’s meant to be!” the nuns replied.

64/83

“Who says? What’s the point?”

65/83

“We don’t know. That’s just how it is!”

66/83

“If you carry on like this, you’ll stop being manas and turn back into glamrocks. Is that what you want?”

67/83

「不!不!」

“No! No!”

68/83

“Then remember, doing bad to others is not allowed! You’re not allowed to hurt anyone. What have Mana-fata and I ever done to hurt you?”

69/83

“Nothing, nothing! The manas are kind!”

70/83

“And what about you though? You were going to eat us!” “You are one of us now! The others aren’t!”

71/83

“Mana-lisa, come here,” Matilda called out. “You are you. The others are all the rest and not just ‘our own or not our own’. You must never hurt another. You have to look after people, otherwise, Mana-lisa will stop being a mana and go back to being an ugly glamrock again. Is that what you want?”

72/83

“No! No! I want to be a mana!”

73/83

“And what about you?” said Matilda turning her gaze to the others. “This goes for all of you! Do you all understand what it means to be a mana? It means to do good for others.”

74/83

“But how, how?” the nuns stammered. “How do we do good for others?”

75/83

“We’re about to show you.” Matilda placed a fish and flat bread on the plate and nodded to Itfut to fill a plate, too. Then together, they went up to one of the nuns and handed her the plate of food.

76/83

“There, we are doing something good for you but before you dig in you have to do the same for one of your sisters.”

77/83

The nun was surprised but she did as she was told and passed a plate of food to the nun sitting next to her.

78/83

“And now you,” said Matilda to the recipient. “Pass it on and do something good for another. There is enough food for everyone!”

79/83

The diva and the priestess each passed their plate to one of the nuns who passed in on to another going around the circle until everyone had a plate of food.

80/83

“Is everyone feeling good now?” asked Matilda. “Yes! Yes!” the nuns answered in unison.

81/83

“There, you see! And why does everyone feel good?” “Why? Why?” the nuns said answering her with a question.

82/83

“Because when you do good to others, it comes back to you. Understand?” “We understand, we understand!” the nuns said nodding.

83/83

“Okay, you can eat now. Enjoy!”
