Abduction of the Wild Maid

Beast’s cave was nice and cozy. The entrance, a secluded spot in the foothills, was camouflaged by a dense, impassable bush. To access the cave, one had to crawl on all fours through a secret gap known only to Beast himself.

No. Looks like there might be something interesting there. No. Food of some kind? No. So, what am I doing standing here then? It’s not like I’m stupid.’ And with that, they would move on.

Beast’s cave was like a studio apartment combining the living room, kitchen and bedroom into one spacious room. At the center he had a neatly laid stone hearth. Smoke from the fire rose up to a dome above and then through a crevice leading somewhere up and, evidently, out. It was all very practical. There was warmth, light and no offspring.

Bright resin torches on all four sides provided an additional source of light. Beast lit them sometimes to make things a little cheerier.

In one spot a spring emerged right from the wall bursting forth into a waterfall that poured down into a voluminous stone hollow from which the water flowed deeper into the depths of the cave. The cave itself stretched deep into the bowels of the mountain but Beast did not ever venture further in. The most distant recesses of the cave were dark and cold and of no interest to him.

Overall, it was a dwelling equipped with all the necessary amenities. The sleeping area was also arranged very comfortably. In the rock wall beside the hearth there was a wide, flat ledge luxuriously lined with thick, soft skins. Other animal skins were lain out across the corners to add a little more comfort. And everywhere, all kinds of horns and antlers hung from the walls as evidence of successful hunting, some branched and bent, others straight. There were necklaces hanging from the wall too made from claws and fangs. The fangs were large and scary, the claws long and sharp.

The knives made of obsidian, like razors. The arrows were sharp, their tips also of obsidian. The boar spears were impressive and convincing. The handles of all the weapons were solid and reliable so that they would not slip easily from one’s grip.

Beast was an exceptionally capable caveman. There was nothing he did not have or know when it came to cave life. All he lacked was a companion, or rather, a girlfriend. He most definitely had no need of any other kind of companion since he disliked the so-called ‘human’ intensely.

So, Beast sad and lonely, concluded that he needed a woman. Why? He reasoned as follows: you can look at a woman. You can watch her walking, sitting and lying down. You can watch how she eats, bathes, combs her hair and preens herself. You can watch her messing about with household chores. You can watch her watching you. It would be so interesting to watch a woman. Right now, everything around him was the same. There was nothing worth looking at. He had even tired of watching the fire in the hearth that normally he could watch endlessly. Now if a woman were to appear, you would never get tired of looking at her if, of course, she wanted to look at you too.

You could touch her and stroke her everywhere. A woman was nice because she had soft skin and all her parts were rounded, chubby and soft. This was how Beast reasoned with himself about having a girlfriend.

He also thought that it would be nice to take care of a woman, to feed her, clothe her and walk with her, to protect her from predatory animals and pesky people. He could bring her game, make her laugh, tug at her, play with her, make her mad and watch her get angry, and then immediately calm her down and console her, entertain her in lots of ways. He would figure out how when the time came.

Beast decided he needed to catch himself a woman. But how? Obviously, he had to steal, heist or kidnap one, whatever it took. He would catch her and drag her into his cave. Naturally, she would squeal and struggle so he would have to hold her tight and drag her to his place. It was all quite clear in his mind.

And so, Beast set out in search of a girlfriend. Search options were very few: either he would look in his former tribe or someone else’s. As it was a long way to someone else’s, he set off for his own. The tribal camp was located in a valley surrounded by mountains and forest. From time to time, Beast stopped along the way and listened. He had not gone far before he heard voices from somewhere in the distance. He headed in that direction.

A group of women were grazing in a forest glade gathering berries. The gathering was mainly done by young women who did not have small children. ‘What luxury!’ thought Beast staring at them wide-eyed. ‘Fools. They don’t guard their luxury. They don’t value it.’ He hid in the thicket and watched wondering which one to choose. Finally, his gaze fell on the one he liked the best. She was standing just on the edge of the glade.

Beast jumped suddenly into the clearing, grabbed hold of his victim, threw her across his shoulder and set off into the forest at speed. The rest froze in shock and fright, then started shouting, but no one rushed in hot pursuit of the kidnapper. Accustomed to occupying the position of the lower class, women did not know how to stand up for themselves.

Beast ran as far as he could. The woman he was carrying was not large, but she was not skinny either. She was nicely rounded which did not make her light. Of course, she kicked and yelled for the whole forest to hear. In contrast to the idyllic paintings ‘Abduction of Proserpine’, ‘Europe’ and ‘Psyche’, this primitive abduction scene was quite startling consisting of a shaggy savage in an animal skin with his prey, just as wild and also half-naked.

Having reached his lair, Beast lowered the woman to the ground and ordered her to climb into the narrow passage between the bushes that lead to the cave. To add a note of conviction, he gave her a shove from behind. She squealed but climbed through the passage even so. Once inside the cave, the woman began to look around her, still yelling.

Catching his breathe a little, Beast said, “What are you yelling for? I’m not going to eat you.” But she did not stop. Then he grabbed her and pulled her tightly to his body. This calmed her down and finally she became quiet. Beast sat her on a soft skin, lit torches and busied himself with the hearth. The wild maid was still afraid, but she observed him with curiosity.

She took the comb and with obvious pleasure began twirling it in her hands. “I will be back soon,” said Beast and then he left the cave.

Beast started to creep cautiously into the clearing where the dumb animal was grazing. But unexpectedly, the whole mystery of the hunt was disturbed by a silly bird.

Beast tried to drive the bird away, but she would not leave him alone. Trying to get free of the bird, Beast suddenly found himself in the clearing almost face to face with the animal.

The dumb animal was chewing grass and looking at Beast indifferently. ‘This won’t do,’ he thought. ‘What kind of hunting is this? No danger and totally uninteresting.’ Hunting in virgin forest was not exactly complicated. The forest was full of birds and animals and no-one was afraid of Beast. Annoyed, he had finally had enough and so he hit the bird on its silly head with his spear. The bird fell down dead before she had time to realize what was happening.

She took it and began to gnaw at the fruit enthusiastically looking at her master, who looked at her with pleasure while he prepared dinner.

Beast quickly plucked the bird and put it on a skewer above the fire. Soon, the delicious smelling dish was ready.

Finally, in a separate corner, simple but useful utensils were neatly laid out: kitchen utensils, tools for dressing hides and sewing and other household items. Beast was an exceptionally capable caveman. There was nothing he did not have or know when it came to cave life. All he lacked was a companion, or rather, a girlfriend. He most definitely had no need of any other kind of companion since he disliked the so-called ‘human’ intensely.

So, Beast sad and lonely, concluded that he needed a woman. Why? He reasoned as follows: you can look at a woman. You can watch her walking, sitting and lying down. You can watch how she eats, bathes, combs her hair and preens herself. You can watch her messing about with household chores. You can watch her watching you. It would be so interesting to watch a woman. Right now, everything around him was the same. There was nothing worth looking at. He had even tired of watching the fire in the hearth that normally he could watch endlessly. Now if a woman were to appear, you would never get tired of looking at her if, of course, she wanted to look at you too.

You can touch a woman, touch her hair, shoulders and chest, stroke her back, arms and legs, hug her from behind, hold her and not let her go. Or you could face her and hold her pulling her tight. You could touch her and stroke her everywhere. A woman was nice because she had soft skin and all her parts were rounded, chubby and soft. This was how Beast reasoned with himself about having a girlfriend.

He also thought that it would be nice to take care of a woman, to feed her, clothe her and walk with her, to protect her from predatory animals and pesky people. He could bring her game, make her laugh, tug at her, play with her, make her mad and watch her get angry, and then immediately calm her down and console her, entertain her in lots of ways. He would figure out how when the time came.

Beast決定必須給自己抓個女人。但如何才能得到呢？很明顯，他得採取偷竊、劫持或綁架等方法，不論花多少手段。他要將她抓住，拖到自己的山洞裡。當然，她會尖叫並奮力掙扎，而他只好緊緊抱住她，硬將她拖回自己的住處。這一切在他的腦海中已是如此明確。

Beast decided he needed to catch himself a woman. But how? Obviously, he had to steal, heist or kidnap one, whatever it took. He would catch her and drag her into his cave. Naturally, she would squeal and struggle so he would have to hold her tight and drag her to his place. It was all quite clear in his mind.

於是，Beast開始尋找他的女伴。可供選擇的搜尋範圍非常有限：要麼是回到他原先的部落，要麼就去別人的部落。由於去別人的部落路途遙遠，他便決定回到自己的部落。那個部落營地座落於一個被群山和森林環繞的山谷中。一路上，Beast不時停下來聆聽。沒走多久，他便聽到了遠處傳來的聲音，他便朝那個方向走去。

And so, Beast set out in search of a girlfriend. Search options were very few: either he would look in his former tribe or someone else’s. As it was a long way to someone else’s, he set off for his own. The tribal camp was located in a valley surrounded by mountains and forest. From time to time, Beast stopped along the way and listened. He had not gone far before he heard voices from somewhere in the distance. He headed in that direction.

一群女人正悠然自得地在森林空地上放牧並採摘漿果。這次採摘多由那些沒有小孩的年輕女子負責。「真是奢侈啊！」Beast目不轉睛地看著她們心中暗想，「真是些傻瓜，她們不懂得保護自己的奢侈，對奢華根本不懂得珍惜。」他躲進茂密的灌木叢中，觀察著，思索著該選哪一個。最終，他的目光停留在那個他最喜歡的身影上——她正站在空地的邊緣。

A group of women were grazing in a forest glade gathering berries. The gathering was mainly done by young women who did not have small children. ‘What luxury!’ thought Beast staring at them wide-eyed. ‘Fools. They don’t guard their luxury. They don’t value it.’ He hid in the thicket and watched wondering which one to choose. Finally, his gaze fell on the one he liked the best. She was standing just on the edge of the glade.

Beast突然躍出樹叢，衝進空地，一把抓住他的目標，將她搭在肩上，然後以極快的速度衝入森林。其他女人頓時驚呆、害怕，開始大聲喊叫，但沒有人急於追趕這位綁架犯。習慣於處於社會下層地位的女人根本不知道如何為自己爭取權益。

Beast jumped suddenly into the clearing, grabbed hold of his victim, threw her across his shoulder and set off into the forest at speed. The rest froze in shock and fright, then started shouting, but no one rushed in hot pursuit of the kidnapper. Accustomed to occupying the position of the lower class, women did not know how to stand up for themselves.

Beast盡可能地奔跑，而他肩上的那個女人既不魁梧，也非瘦弱，她身形豐滿，這使她並不輕盈。當然，她一路上踢打嚷嚷，聲音傳遍整個森林。與那些理想化畫作《普洛塞庇娜的綁架》、《歐洲》和《靈魂》所描繪的情景相比，這場原始的綁架畫面極為觸目驚心：一個毛茸茸的野蠻人披著獸皮，與他的獵物一起，既狂野又半裸。

Beast ran as far as he could. The woman he was carrying was not large, but she was not skinny either. She was nicely rounded which did not make her light. Of course, she kicked and yelled for the whole forest to hear. In contrast to the idyllic paintings ‘Abduction of Proserpine’, ‘Europe’ and ‘Psyche’, this primitive abduction scene was quite startling consisting of a shaggy savage in an animal skin with his prey, just as wild and also half-naked.

當Beast抵達他的巢穴後，他將那女人放到地上，命令她爬進灌木叢間那條狹窄的通道，通向山洞。為了顯示他的決心，他還從背後推了她一把。她尖叫著，但還是爬入了那條通道。進入山洞後，那女人開始四處張望，仍不住地尖叫。

Having reached his lair, Beast lowered the woman to the ground and ordered her to climb into the narrow passage between the bushes that lead to the cave. To add a note of conviction, he gave her a shove from behind. She squealed but climbed through the passage even so. Once inside the cave, the woman began to look around her, still yelling.

Beast稍微喘了口氣後說：「你為什麼一直尖叫？我不會吃掉你。」但她依然沒有停下尖叫。接著，他將她緊緊拉到自己的身邊，這使她終於安靜下來。Beast把她安置在一張柔軟的獸皮上，點燃火把，忙碌於壁爐旁。那野女依然心存畏懼，但她好奇地打量著他。

Catching his breathe a little, Beast said, “What are you yelling for? I’m not going to eat you.” But she did not stop. Then he grabbed her and pulled her tightly to his body. This calmed her down and finally she became quiet. Beast sat her on a soft skin, lit torches and busied himself with the hearth. The wild maid was still afraid, but she observed him with curiosity.

Beast認為自己現在已經有了女人，而且他也能看見她注視著自己，這讓他感到無比驚奇！他也可以隨心所欲地看她，甚至觸摸她。雖然，他現在大概已經觸碰得足夠多了。他的第一個任務便是供她食用。Beast準備充足，但他卻想為自己的女人準備些新鮮美味的食物。

Beast thought he had a woman now and he could see that she was looking at him. How amazing! And he could look at her too, for as long as he liked and even touch her. Although, he had probably touched her enough for now. His first task was to feed her. Beast had plenty of supplies, but he wanted to treat his woman to something fresh and tasty.

Beast迅速做好準備，拿起一支長矛、一把弓箭和他腰間常備的那把刀。他沒必要走太遠，因為所有的狩獵都在這片森林中進行。他轉向那女人說：「坐在這裡不要動，四周都有掠食動物，它們會抓咬。你明白嗎？」

Beast did not take long to get ready. He took a spear, bow and arrows and the knife which he always kept on his belt. He did not have to go far either. All his hunting was right here in the forest. He turned to the woman and said, “Sit here and don’t go anywhere. There are predatory animals all around us that scratch and bite. Do you understand?”

「是的，我的主人，」那少女回答道，這是她首次以帶有人類語音的語調應答。

“Yes, my lord,” said the maid, her voice sounding human for the first time.

「你怎麼這麼髒？快去洗洗吧。我這裡有個池子，你看，這是給你的。」 他把一把美麗的骨製梳子遞給了她。

“And why are you so grimy? Go and wash. I have a whole pool here, see? And this is for you.” He handed her a beautiful bone comb for her hair.

She took the comb and with obvious pleasure began twirling it in her hands. “I will be back soon,” said Beast and then he left the cave.

Beast心想，要養活一個女人，就得有新鮮獵物的肉，還有一層新的獸皮也不錯。現在我們有兩個人，什麼都要更多。最適合的獵物，就該是那種笨拙、有角的動物。Beast知道這種動物通常在哪裡吃草，就朝附近的方向走去。

To feed a woman, you need the meat of fresh game. A new skin wouldn’t be bad either. Now there are two of us, Beast thought, and we’ll need more of everything. The most suitable candidate for such a matter would be a dumb, horned animal. Beast knew where a dumb animal usually grazed, and headed in that direction, just nearby.

要狩獵這動物，得先悄然接近，然後猛然跳出，在牠的頸部刺上一矛——這是最肯定、最快的方法。Beast開始小心翼翼地潛入那個笨動物正在放牧的空地，但意外地，這次獵捕的整個計劃被一隻愚蠢的小鳥打亂了。

In order to hunt the animal, you had to creep up unseen and then jump out suddenly and spear him in the neck. That was the surest, quickest way. Beast started to creep cautiously into the clearing where the dumb animal was grazing. But unexpectedly, the whole mystery of the hunt was disturbed by a silly bird.

不知怎的，那隻鳥似乎出於好奇或單純好鬧，竟對Beast產生了依戀，用她那愚蠢的叫聲「Kli-kli-kli」毫無保留地暴露出他的存在。

For some reason, she became attached to Beast, whether out of curiosity or pure mischief-making, and totally betrayed his presence with her silly cries, “Kli-kli- kli”.

那隻鳥體型龐大、不能飛且極為愚蠢。牠用修長的腿在Beast周圍亂跑，不斷啄著他並叫著「Kli, kli」。雖然不清楚牠究竟想要什麼，但無論如何，牠已將狩獵計劃搞得亂七八糟。Beast試圖把鳥趕走，卻怎麼也甩不掉牠。正想擺脫這鳥的糾纏時，Beast猛然發現自己幾乎與那動物面對面站在空地上。

The bird was large, flightless and very silly. She ran around Beast on her long legs pecking at him and crying, “Kli, kli“. It was not clear what she wanted but either way, she had spoiled the hunt. Beast tried to drive the bird away, but she would not leave him alone. Trying to get free of the bird, Beast suddenly found himself in the clearing almost face to face with the animal.

那笨拙的動物正在咀嚼青草，漠然地注視著Beast。Beast心道：「這樣不行，這算什麼狩獵？既沒有危險，也實在無趣。」 在這片原始森林中狩獵並不複雜，鳥獸成群，沒有人怕他。惱怒之下，他終於受夠了，便用矛狠狠地打在那鳥愚蠢的腦袋上，鳥還沒來得及反應，就斃命倒地。

The dumb animal was chewing grass and looking at Beast indifferently. ‘This won’t do,’ he thought. ‘What kind of hunting is this? No danger and totally uninteresting.’ Hunting in virgin forest was not exactly complicated. The forest was full of birds and animals and no-one was afraid of Beast. Annoyed, he had finally had enough and so he hit the bird on its silly head with his spear. The bird fell down dead before she had time to realize what was happening.

那笨動物對空地上發生的一切視若無睹，繼續淡然咀嚼著青草。Beast心想：「好吧，這鳥倒是一隻大鳥，肯定有豐盛的肉可取，不錯的獵物，而且味道也可能極佳。」

The dumb animal was not at all surprised by the scene that was playing out in the clearing and continued chewing its gum with complete indifference.’All right,’ thought Beast. ‘It’s a big bird. There’ll be plenty of meat. It’s not bad game. And it’ll probably taste good, too.’

接著，他按照以往狩獵後的「送葬」儀式進行，對著那鳥說：「你這愚蠢的鳥，雖然你曾笨拙無比，但如今你的靈魂將升華，進入更高的存在，也許會變成一位眼神聰慧的美麗女子；你將變得聰明快樂，成為一隻美麗的鳥女。」

He performed the game ‘funeral’ ritual as he usually did in such cases. He said to the bird, “You, silly bird, were a stupid bird, but now your soul will enter a higher being, maybe even a woman, a beautiful woman with smart eyes. And you will be smart and happy, a beautiful bird-woman.”

Beast撿起獵物，急忙返回山洞與他的女人那裡。他發現她已洗漱整潔，正坐在鋪滿柔軟獸皮的床上等候著。

Beast picked up his kill and hastened back to his cave and to his woman. He found her waiting for him already washed and combed sitting on the bed covered with soft skins.

Beast問道：「餓了嗎？」

“Hungry?” asked Beast.

「是的，我的主人，」那少女回答。

“Yes, my lord,” said the maid.

「這個先嚼著吧，」他說著，把一路上摘下來的一種甜樹果子遞給她。

“Here, chew on this for now,” he said and handed her the fruit of a sweet tree, which he had plucked along the way.

她接過果子，興致勃勃地咬了起來，目光緊盯著她的主人，而他在準備晚餐時，滿心喜悅地看著她。

She took it and began to gnaw at the fruit enthusiastically looking at her master, who looked at her with pleasure while he prepared dinner.

Beast迅速拔下那隻鳥，串在火上的竹籤上。不久，那道散發著誘人氣息的佳餚便做好了。

Beast quickly plucked the bird and put it on a skewer above the fire. Soon, the delicious smelling dish was ready.
