Shaggy Beast
1/42
Shaggy Beast had not uttered a word since the company left the mysterious spot where the lid ended and the other side of reality began, which they could not enter.
2/42
Beast saw something in the mirror there that astounded him so much that he did not know what to think or say, and so for this reason, he did not say anything to anyone. There, in his reflection, he saw something that was not quite himself, or rather, was him but in human form.
3/42
Despite the fact that his reflection, like that of everyone else, was vague and ghost-like, Beast could quite definitely make out a young man of pleasant appearance with large sad eyes, brown hair to the shoulders, and a suit of indeterminable era and nationality. He was wearing trousers and something between a coat and a long-sleeved blazer both in black velvet with large gold buttons, as well as a snow-white shirt with a ruffled frill. Strangely incongruous with his elegant suit, his feet were shod in shaggy loafers made of chestnut- colored wool.
4/42
Beast was in no doubt that the figure was he, but he could not understand how he could possibly look like that. In what kind of reality would he be capable of assuming that form?
5/42
Something similar had happened to Beast before. Beast had the gift of being able to remember his previous incarnations. He had never told anyone about this ability partly because he did not understand what the incarnations actually were: past lives, metamorphoses, or just dreams.
6/42
So, this was not the first time Beast had seen himself in a different guise and in a different reality, only never before had he seen himself as a handsome young man. By the will of some providence, as a rule, brutal characters befell him and even then, they were not always human. In this incarnation for example, it was not clear what he was: basically, animal but one of unspecified breed. He was of right mind, totally competent and if you looked in his eyes, you could even tell that he was endowed with extraordinary, spiritual qualities.
7/42
The recent ‘love-killing’ scene had affected him no less than the reflection in the mirror. Beast was lost in reminiscing about one of his recent incarnations, in which he lived his life as a lonely caveman.
8/42
More precisely, he did not become a hermit straight away. Before that, he lived among a primitive tribe of hunter-gatherers. The tribe was divided into humans and women. Women were not considered totally adequate or fully entitled.
9/42
Humans decided it should be that way because they were stronger than women. It was not something they decided from the very outset. The idea came to them gradually as they began having thoughts, which was a rare occurrence.
10/42
In the beginning, women were human, too. But then humans turned their attention to the fact that women were more beautiful than they were. They looked and looked, and at some point, it occurred to them to ask, “Why are they so beautiful? And what about us, are we any less beautiful than they are?” And then they said to women, “Take off your new clothes. From now on you will wear old rags.”
11/42
“Why?” the women objected. “That’s unfair. We don’t want to!” “Then we’ll beat you,” answered humans.
12/42
“Okay, we agree. We understand.”
13/42
But humans beat them anyway just to make sure they properly understood.
14/42
Then women began dressing in castoffs. But the rags laid bare their beautiful hands, legs, spine and chest and women aroused desire in humans. They looked and looked at them, and the thought came to their minds, “Why do we want them more than they want us? Are we any worse than they are? Can’t we control ourselves? Or are we just depraved?’ And then they said to women, “You are lustful. You are lascivious. Cover your wicked bodies. Cover everything up and don’t show yourselves. You will only reveal yourselves when we allow you to.”
15/42
“How come you decide everything and get to allow or disallow?” the women objected.
16/42
“Because we are stronger,” humans answered. “Then we won’t give ourselves to you.”
17/42
“If you are obedient, we’ll gift you jewelry.” “And if we aren’t?”
18/42
“We’ll beat you.”
19/42
“Okay, we agree, we understand,” women said.
20/42
But people beat them anyway just to make sure they properly understood.
21/42
That was how they lived. Humans thought that they were clever, but they tried to decide everything for themselves and their decisions were not always crowned with success. In many ways, women were wiser than humans. Humans looked and looked at women and thought, ‘Are we really any less clever or are we more stupid than they are?’ And then they said to women, “You’re stupid.”
22/42
“Why do you think that?” asked women. “Because we’re smart.”
23/42
“We’re smart too.”
24/42
“No, you’re not. You’re stupid. We’re taking away your right to vote.” “But that’s not fair!”
25/42
“Your opinion doesn’t matter anymore.” “But that’s unfair! It’s wrong!”
26/42
“Well then, we’ll just have to beat you.” “Okay, we agree, we understand,” women said.
27/42
But people beat them anyway just to make sure they properly understood.
28/42
That was how they lived. There was plenty of work. They hardly had any free time. They all worked on equal terms and received equal reward, humans and women alike. People looked at them and looked and then the thought came to them, ‘Why are they on a par with us as if they were no worse than us?’ And then humans said to women,
29/42
“We are only going to hunt. You will do everything else: build homes, cook food, raise children, dress skins, make crafts, sew clothes and manage the rest of the household.”
30/42
“Why?” asked women in surprise.
31/42
“Because hunting is more interesting, simpler and altogether easier,” humans answered. “Because it suits us that way.”
32/42
“But that’s outrageous?! As if you were any better than us!” “We are better than you.”
33/42
“And if we refuse? If we won’t?” “Well then we’ll just have to beat you.”
34/42
“Okay, we agree, we understand,” women said.
35/42
But people beat them anyway just to make sure they properly understood.
36/42
That was how they lived. People hunted while the women cooked and did everything else. If the hunt turned out to be unsuccessful and there was not enough food to go around, only humans ate. Women went hungry. Humans thought, ‘We’re the ones who bring back the bacon, after all. We’re more important. That’s just as it should be.’ And as they ended up having quite a lot of free time, they sat ceremoniously on the humans’ council and made important decisions. And so, humans looked at themselves and looked until the thought came to them, ‘We are actually very important.’ And then they said to women, “We are important humans. We are humans.”
37/42
“So, who are we then? What kind of beings are we?” asked women. “You are unimportant and inferior. You aren’t humans.”
38/42
Women did not bother objecting because that they knew that they would only be beaten if they did. But they were beaten anyway.
39/42
That was how they lived. Beast looked and looked at all this and said to humans, “You’re wrong. This is not right. You mustn’t behave like this.”
40/42
“You are not like us,” humans said in surprise, and then they all began to stare at him.
41/42
“No, it’s you who aren’t like me.” “We’re going to drive you out.”
42/42
“No, I’m going to leave anyway,” said Beast and went away to live by himself in a cave.
