Shaggy Beast

Shaggy Beast had not uttered a word since the company left the mysterious spot where the lid ended and the other side of reality began, which they could not enter.

Despite the fact that his reflection, like that of everyone else, was vague and ghost-like, Beast could quite definitely make out a young man of pleasant appearance with large sad eyes, brown hair to the shoulders, and a suit of indeterminable era and nationality. He was wearing trousers and something between a coat and a long-sleeved blazer both in black velvet with large gold buttons, as well as a snow-white shirt with a ruffled frill. Strangely incongruous with his elegant suit, his feet were shod in shaggy loafers made of chestnut- colored wool.

野獸毫不懷疑那個身影是他，但他無法理解自己怎麼可能看起來那樣。在什麼樣的現實中，他能夠呈現那種形態？

Beast was in no doubt that the figure was he, but he could not understand how he could possibly look like that. In what kind of reality would he be capable of assuming that form?

Something similar had happened to Beast before. Beast had the gift of being able to remember his previous incarnations. He had never told anyone about this ability partly because he did not understand what the incarnations actually were: past lives, metamorphoses, or just dreams.

So, this was not the first time Beast had seen himself in a different guise and in a different reality, only never before had he seen himself as a handsome young man. By the will of some providence, as a rule, brutal characters befell him and even then, they were not always human. In this incarnation for example, it was not clear what he was: basically, animal but one of unspecified breed. He was of right mind, totally competent and if you looked in his eyes, you could even tell that he was endowed with extraordinary, spiritual qualities.

The recent ‘love-killing’ scene had affected him no less than the reflection in the mirror. Beast was lost in reminiscing about one of his recent incarnations, in which he lived his life as a lonely caveman.

Or are we just depraved?’ And then they said to women, “You are lustful. You are lascivious. Cover your wicked bodies. Cover everything up and don’t show yourselves. You will only reveal yourselves when we allow you to.”

“How come you decide everything and get to allow or disallow?” the women objected.

“Because we are stronger,” humans answered. “Then we won’t give ourselves to you.”

That’s just as it should be.’ And as they ended up having quite a lot of free time, they sat ceremoniously on the humans’ council and made important decisions. And so, humans looked at themselves and looked until the thought came to them, ‘We are actually very important.’ And then they said to women, “We are important humans. We are humans.”

“So, who are we then? What kind of beings are we?” asked women. “You are unimportant and inferior. You aren’t humans.”

Women did not bother objecting because that they knew that they would only be beaten if they did. But they were beaten anyway.

That was how they lived. Beast looked and looked at all this and said to humans, “You’re wrong. This is not right. You mustn’t behave like this.”
