Expedition Lid

And so, the company we have already met, or rather ‘Expedition Lid’ as we shall refer to them went in search of the edge of the lid which had covered the world for reasons not yet understood. As Queen Brunhilda had adequately reasoned, in order to find out what kind of lid it was, they had to at least locate the edge of it.

The procession was led by Eejit Green who carried his club on his shoulder. Brunhilda walked second because she had condescendingly agreed to the suggestion that Eejit could serve as her bodyguard. The warrior-like queen did not really require the service but, knowing Eejit, she decided not to engage in an altercation with him, which could take up a lot of time. Next came Orange Cow with her wings folded so that they would not get in the way. Behind her went Yellow Submarine in her orange boots. Finally, Shaggy Beast brought up the rear and was very unhappy not to be next to the queen, but Brunhilda looked at him sternly and ordered him to obey, as well as to guard the expedition from the rear, which was a mission of extreme importance.

Suddenly, Eejit stopped and turned back to face the others almost hitting the queen in the face with his club. The others stopped too, confused.

The lid stretched across the entire sky and so its edges could not in fact be seen. “So, what does the honorable Eejit suggest?” asked Brunhilda.

Without further delay, the expedition set off along their chosen path. They walked and walked and finally arrived. In front of them stretched an amazing azure sea with grass and palm trees on the shore. The gray lid ended just above the coast and immediately beyond it was the blue sky and floating clouds, just as it should be.

“Tremendous! This is where I can swim!” shouted Submarine.

“I had the honor of strolling along the coast the other day but there were no palm trees there, only snags,” Eejit said.

The entire company rushed enthusiastically towards the open embrace of a dream. Beast rushed ahead of the others as his paws meant he could run faster than anyone. So, he was the first to throw all four paws up against the invisible wall that rose unexpectedly before him. The others, unable to believe their eyes or Beast’s unsuccessful experiment, repeated the same. They bumped into it, fell and were convinced that the wall did really exist.

Having got back up on their feet again, they began walking back and forth feeling their way along the barrier in complete bewilderment. Being completely transparent, the wall also turned out to be solid and impenetrable like glass and, in addition, it had a reflective quality, although not quite that of a mirror. To everyone’s surprise the strange mirror, rather than reflecting the surrounding objects and landscape, reflected the blurry silhouettes of our heroines, who from this side looked like ghosts. This confused everyone even more.

“What madness is this?!” exclaimed Eejit, who had lost all his eloquence.

The queen was silent and pensive, Beast snorted in displeasure, and Cow kept fumbling along the mirror surface first with horns and then with hooves but all in vain. They had reached a dead-end.

“That’s none of your business! I don’t need flippers. I hate you, scumbag!”

The others stood with their heads tilted backward watching the whole piloting process in great anticipation. After circling a little under the lid itself, Cow began her descent and soon, to everyone’s satisfaction, landed back down again successfully.

「萬歲！我們終於抵達邊緣！這裡將是我展翅高飛的天地！」Cow尖叫起來。

“Hooray-hooray! We’ve reached the edge! Here’s where I can fly!” screeched Cow.

Eejit說：「前幾天我有幸沿著海岸漫步，但那裡沒有棕櫚，只有一些枯木。」

“I had the honor of strolling along the coast the other day but there were no palm trees there, only snags,” Eejit said.

Brunhilda回答說：「是啊，彷彿那全是一片與我們不同的海，又有什麼關係？我們現在就走吧！去暢泳！」

“Yes, it’s like it’s a different sea, not ours,” said Brunhilda. “What difference does it make? Let’s go now! Let’s swim!”

整個隊伍滿懷熱情地衝向那夢想中張開的懷抱。Beast因為四肢靈活，跑得比任何人都快，便領先眾人，成為第一個向那突如其來、看不見的牆猛衝過去的人。其他人見狀既驚又疑，也紛紛效仿。他們相繼撞上這堵牆，跌倒，於是堅信這堵牆確實存在。

The entire company rushed enthusiastically towards the open embrace of a dream. Beast rushed ahead of the others as his paws meant he could run faster than anyone. So, he was the first to throw all four paws up against the invisible wall that rose unexpectedly before him. The others, unable to believe their eyes or Beast’s unsuccessful experiment, repeated the same. They bumped into it, fell and were convinced that the wall did really exist.

重新站起來後，他們在那堵牆前來回摸索、踟躕不前，一臉茫然。這堵牆全然透明，卻又堅固得如同玻璃，且具有反光的特質（Note:雖不像真正的鏡子那般完美，但仍有明顯反射效果）。令人驚奇的是，這面怪異的鏡子並不是映出周遭的景物與風光，而是模糊地反映出我們女主角那些似幽靈般的身影，從這一邊望去，猶如鬼魅一般，這情景更令人困惑不已。

Having got back up on their feet again, they began walking back and forth feeling their way along the barrier in complete bewilderment. Being completely transparent, the wall also turned out to be solid and impenetrable like glass and, in addition, it had a reflective quality, although not quite that of a mirror. To everyone’s surprise the strange mirror, rather than reflecting the surrounding objects and landscape, reflected the blurry silhouettes of our heroines, who from this side looked like ghosts. This confused everyone even more.

「這究竟是什麼瘋狂？」Eejit失去了所有辯才，大聲喊道。

“What madness is this?!” exclaimed Eejit, who had lost all his eloquence.

「唉，我們從蓋子下逃出來，卻撞進了一面鏡子，」Submarine失望地補充道。

“Well, we got out from under the lid only to stumble into a mirror,” Submarine added in disappointment.

女王一言不發，沉思其中；Beast則不悅地哼了一聲；而Cow連續用角碰、再用蹄子撥弄那鏡面，卻徒勞無功。他們最終發現，眼前竟是死路一條。

The queen was silent and pensive, Beast snorted in displeasure, and Cow kept fumbling along the mirror surface first with horns and then with hooves but all in vain. They had reached a dead-end.

「好吧，我就以我的狂妄來揭穿這荒謬的亵渎吧。」Eejit邊說邊揮舞棍子，用他所有愚蠢的力氣猛擊玻璃，但那鏡子連震動都不曾發生，更不用說出現裂痕了。它像磐石般無法摧毀，卻同時流露出某種難以捉摸的神秘感。

“Well, I dare to expose this profanation with my profaner,” said Eejit. Swinging his club, he pounded against the glass with all his foolish might, but the mirror did not even vibrate, let alone crack. It was as indestructible as a rock although at the same time, there was something intangible about it.

「我們這裡需要的不是力量，而是另有所求，」Brunhilda語氣平和地說。

“What’s needed here is not power, but something else,” Brunhilda said.

「不，是要更堅硬、更實在的東西，」Eejit邊說邊斜睨著Submarine。

“No, harder and with something more solid,” said Eejit throwing Submarine a sidelong glance.

「你可別想了！」話音未落，Submarine還未反應過來，Eejit便突然抓住她，像公羊般把她用力推向玻璃。結果，事情依然毫無改變。

“Don’t you even think about it!” No sooner had Submarine shouted than Eejit grabbed her and thrust her up against the glass like a ram. The result, nonetheless, was the same.

「哦，你這混蛋！」Submarine尖叫道，「Beast，快救救我！」

“Oh, you bastard!” shouted Submarine, “Beast, save me!”

Shaggy Beast向Eejit跳去，Eejit立刻鬆手，並小心翼翼地退了幾步。

Shaggy Beast jumped at Eejit who immediately released his victim, taking a few cautious steps back.

「知道嗎，Eejit，」女王平靜地說，「你要再耍出這種把戲，就會慚愧地被逐出這個團隊！」

“You know what, Eejit,” said the queen. “One more trick like that from you and you will be driven from this team in shame.”

「好，好吧！」Green試圖辯解，「你們究竟有什麼大不了的？她可是鐵打的，絕對不會出事的！」

“All right, all right!” said Green trying to justify himself. “What are you all so cross about? She’s made of iron, nothing will happen to her!”

「那就試試你的腦袋吧，說不定它更堅硬呢！」Submarine大聲喊道。

“Let’s give your head a try then. It’s probably even harder.” shouted Submarine.

「你想游泳，我這樣做都是為了你。既然結果不如人意，你能怎麼辦？你穿的是靴子，不是蛙鞋，怎能指望穿著靴子游泳？」

“You wanted to swim. I was trying for your sake. Okay, so it did not work out, what can you do? You’re wearing boots not flippers, anyway. How do you intend to swim in boots?”

「那不關你的事！我才不需要蛙鞋呢。混蛋，我真是恨透你了！」

“That’s none of your business! I don’t need flippers. I hate you, scumbag!”

「好了，別生氣，我很抱歉，」Eejit柔聲說道，語氣變得更加懇切。儘管矛盾重重，雖然他實在是個混蛋，但Eejit Green的內心其實十分善良。

“Okay, don’t be angry, I’m sorry,” said Eejit, softening his voice to a tone more conciliatory. However paradoxical, although he really was a scumbag, Eejit Green was kind at heart.

「殿下，」Cow向Brunhilda說，「我們必須採取行動。也許我該爬上去，沿著那蓋子的邊緣上去巡视一番？」

“Your Majesty,” said Cow addressing Brunhilda, “we need to do something. Maybe I should climb up there, as far as the lid goes and take a look around?”

「好主意，親愛的，然後回來告訴我們那邊到底有些什麼，以及我們應該往哪個方向走，」女王回答。

“Good idea, my dear, and then come back and tell us what’s there and in which direction we should go,” said the queen.

Orange Cow整理了下翅膀，隨即起飛，盤旋出一連串螺旋弧線。她的翅膀雖然出奇地小，但卻以不可思議的方式輕鬆飛行。其他人則後仰著頭，滿懷期待地注視著她的駕馭過程。Cow在蓋子下方小小繞行一圈後，開始緩緩下降，不多時便滿足地安全著陸。

Orange Cow straightened her wings and took off drawing spiral circles. Her wings were surprisingly small but in some incomprehensible way she managed to fly with great ease. The others stood with their heads tilted backward watching the whole piloting process in great anticipation. After circling a little under the lid itself, Cow began her descent and soon, to everyone’s satisfaction, landed back down again successfully.

「怎麼樣？」女王問。

“Well?” asked the queen.

「就在那邊，」Cow用角指著那個方向說，「一座某種城市。我沒有發現其他異常。不如我們就往那邊走？」

“Over there,” said Cow pointing in the direction with her horns, “some kind of city. I did not notice anything else unusual. Maybe we should head over there?”

「好，就這麼辦，」女王答道。

“Yes, let’s do that” said the queen.

其他人都連連點頭表示同意，連Eejit也沒有異議。既然決定了，他們便再次啟程。

Everyone else nodded their heads in agreement and even Eejit did not object. Having decided, they set off once again.
